Camp Cope

Founded in Melbourne over home job tattoos, Camp Cope – Georgia Maq (songwriter, vocals, piano, acoustic & electric guitar), Kelly-Dawn Hellmrich (lead bass guitar) and Sarah Thompson (drums & percussion) – have been a force since the release of their self-titled debut album Camp Cope (2016). Their critically-acclaimed follow-up How to Socialise & Make Friends (2018) debuted at #6 on the ARIA Charts with incredible international acclaim including NPR (“Every unpolished moment stuns with turn-of-age earnestness”), The New Yorker (“The words, as raw as the band’s nervy energy, spill out as though she’s been holding them in forever”) and The Guardian (“In 20 years, young women especially will approach her and thank Camp Cope for encouraging them to pick up a guitar and tell their own stories”). Widely loved both in Australia and abroad and the album’s galvanising lead single, ‘The Opener’, shook up the Australian music industry. Both global and personal circumstances prompted Camp Cope’s change of perspective when work on Running With The Hurricane began in late 2019 – but when the pandemic struck a few months later, it forced a hiatus. The world had stopped and suddenly, there was no rush to get an album out and head back on the road. The trio got to just create art for art’s sake, without worrying about how it would perform. But it wasn’t just time Camp Cope had on their side. Running With The Hurricane finds the trio more confident and more skilled than ever before. Making the album the band knew their instruments like the backs of their hands; they were assured enough to ask for what they wanted in the studio. After years of fierce friendship and often relentless tour schedules, they had become innately comfortable as collaborators. Together they levelled up their skills, approach and sound. The resulting sound is still recognisably Camp Cope, just a little softer, a bit more relaxed and much more refined. Running With The Hurricane is an album concerned more with creating beauty than noise and, undoubtedly, is their strongest work yet.

Desire, I Want To Turn Into You is Polachek’s first album release since her 2019 experimental pop masterpiece PANG which cemented her as a generational talent. Her profile has grown exponentially since – landing her everywhere from the direct opening spot on Dua Lipa’s 2022 North American Future Nostalgia Tour, Coachella, Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, Primavera, All Points East, Governors Ball, Pitchfork Music Festival and Outside Lands, along with late-night performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Late Night Show with James Corden. Standout viral tracks like ‘So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings’ have contributed to the album’s 175M global streams and counting.

Carriers

Carriers’ — the project helmed by Cincinnati, Ohio’s Curt Kiser — music has become something of an Ohio talisman, and Curt a true hometown hero. “I have a beautiful, symbiotic relationship with Cincinnati,” he says. Some of Cincy’s most enduring civic entities agree.

During the fall 2024 NFL season, the Cincinnati Bengals tapped him to play a set during a Monday Night Football game. He and his dad (“trust me, he shreds”) rocked out in front of 60,000 fans. Shake It! Records, one of The Queen City’s most beloved local vinyl shops, is working with Carriers on a series of special vinyl LPs. John Curley of Cincinnati alt-rock legends The Afghan Whigs recorded Now Is The Time For Loving Me, Yourself & Everyone Else at his studio. And, finally the Carriers project recently signed to Brassland, an esteemed Brooklyn label co-founded by one of Cincinnati’s most renowned 21st century cultural exports, The National. (That band’s drummer Bryan Devendorf contributed to Curt’s last LP and, in return, Curt did session work on The National’s pair of 2023 albums.)

Love for Carriers extends well beyond Cincinnati city limits. Carriers has opened up for the likes of Big Thief and Damien Jurado and, in summer 2024, nabbed opening slots on tours with Band Of Horses and Fruit Bats. Sharon Van Etten even listed Carriers in the “Recommended Listening” section of the liner notes for her 2019 LP Remind Me Tomorrow.

“When I was 19 years old, I looked to the heavens and asked what I should do with my life,” says Kiser. “I sat on my porch in Cincinnati’s Camp Washington neighborhood and proceeded to write one of the first songs I’d ever written on my own. It’s taken a few hundred songs to feel confident in it, but I’m there now.”

Perhaps we’ll hear more from Carriers’ ever-expanding songbook in 2025.

carwash / Postcard Boy

Carwash is one of the multiple music projects for Los Angeles-based artist Garrett Seamans. While initially releasing music under the moniker Postcard Boy in late high school, carwash began as a side project for him in 2019. Quietly, he dropped the song ‘striptease’ while in the midst of directing six music videos for his Postcard Boy EP called Limbo. Over the course of the next year, carwash continued to grow, releasing follow-up singles (‘supermarket’ and ‘punch22’) as well as continuing to drop Postcard Boy tracks (‘Picture Book’ and ‘skydive’). In 2021, he released the first carwash project called soap water. Along with this, he wrote, directed, and produced a short film titled “soap water: the movie” that accompanies the EP, telling a light-hearted story that is soundtracked chronologically by the five-song project. With a background in film and photography, the visual aspect of both carwash and Postcard Boy is integral to the world each builds out. Now neither artist project holds the front seat, but instead focuses him as an artist on exploring distinct sonic spaces and visual identities.

Chanel Beads

The project of New York-based musician Shane Lavers, his 2024 debut album announced Chanel Beads as a new force in experimental music. At once a hazy relic and a digital snapshot of the human experience, Your Day Will Come captures the many contradictions of modern existence and the strange infiniteness of the digital world. Though he incorporates the scrappy sonics of post-punk, the gripping sentimentality of pop tunes, and the spectral artifice of electronic music, Lavers blurs lines through unconventional song structures that build into transcendental climaxes, as on acclaimed singles ‘Police Scanner’ and ‘Embarrassed Dog’. As he intentionally prints his songs down to embed fried artefacts and ghostly remains, the resulting songs have a time-collapsing quality, both transitory and timeless. Praised locally across fbi radio (Packet Feature Album), triple j, 3RRR, PBS FM and more globally through Pitchfork, PAPER, Perfectly Imperfect, NTS and The Lot Radio among others, his debut was cherished as “complex, melancholic music that intentionally resists being placed in time” (Crack Magazine).
