Jack White

One of the great rock conceptualists of the 21st century, Jack White came to fame as the leader of the White Stripes, the Detroit-based garage-punk duo who unexpectedly became one of the biggest rock acts of the 2000s. His voracious musical appetite and strict work ethic flourished once the White Stripes called it a day in 2011, as he divided his time between his Third Man Records empire, the Raconteurs and Dead Weather, and a solo career that grew increasingly idiosyncratic with each new album. Blunderbuss and Lazaretto veered close to territory he covered with the White Stripes but the proggy oddity of Boarding House Reach didn’t prove to be a detour, as the twin 2022 albums, Fear of the Dawn and Entering Heaven Alive, proved: the noisy rock of the former was complemented by the quiet, introspective adventure of the latter.

Japanese Wallpaper

With more ambient, electronica-based beginnings, Japanese Wallpaper became an Australian indie music fixture in 2014 at the age of 17, after taking out triple j’s Unearthed High competition, swiftly going on to release his debut eponymous EP including collaborations with Airling and Wafia, the latter landing a place in the soundtrack of Zack Braff’s acclaimed film ‘Wish I Was Here’. As his list of musical kin grew, so did his footprint and influence on the wider music scene, becoming a trusted fixture in the studio and on the road for some of Australia’s most needle-moving musical forces including Allday, Tia Gostelow, George Alice, MAY-A, Cry Club, and Alex Lahey – the latter very recently working with Strum to craft the theme for the lauded Netflix original Mitchell vs The Machines. Whilst walking alongside that list of some of triple j’s Most Played artists and crafting his first new music in eighteen months, the Japanese Wallpaper name has stayed present through collaborating on remixes with Petit Biscuit, Death Cab For Cutie, Broods, Charli XCX and Matt Maeson.

In 2022, Jimetta Rose (LA-based singer, composer, arranger and choir leader with a star-studded resumé of collaborations from Anderson. Paak and Georgia Anne Muldrow to Carlos Niño and Angel Bat Dawid) brought The Voices of Creation into the studio to record what would be their debut album How Good It Is. Produced by ex-Beastie Boys producer Mario Caldato Jr. and released on Day Dreamer in partnership with Amor in Sound, the album captured the group’s raw, righteous and uplifting live sound in all its incantatory glory, encapsulated by the vibrant opener ‘Let The Sunshine In’. Or as Jimetta puts it: “We are channeling energy. Let the sunshine in, let it shine through you.”

Far from drawing only on traditional gospel roots, Jimetta’s arrangements engage the vast and varied world of Black music, weaving new visions from old hits, such as Funkadelic’s ‘Cosmic Slop’, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s ‘Spirits Up Above’ to Pharoah Sanders’ ‘Love is Everywhere’, or Faith, Hope & Charity’s ‘To Each His Own’. Doing so has embedded Jimetta and The Voices of Creation in a rich lineage that rejects genre definitions, united under what she calls Black spiritual classical music. “It’s all the hodgepodge of being an African American but also with creativity and vision for the future. It has a taste of what is to come and what we can do.”

Jimetta Rose and The Voices of Creation are now on the cusp of releasing their second album Things Are Getting Better. Produced alongside Jack Maeby and Allakoi Peete, and mixed by Ben Baptie, whose credits include Sault, Little Simz, and Cleo Sol, the album manifests the group’s growing confidence, expanding their palette, and stepping between house, funk, soul, RnB and hip-hop with an assurance that lives up to the album’s rousing title.

Born in New York to Jamaican parents, JPEG spent most of his mid-teens in the deep rural south, bouncing from place to place due to rough circumstances at home.  After graduating high school, JPEG joined the military, deploying to different parts of the world, meeting fellow artists and adding new elements to his producing and rapping repertoire. Now based in Los Angeles, JPEGMAFIA’s sound is dark but not without a humor that makes things even more uncomfortable. His role as villain or satirist, hood protector or nihilist is intentionally hard to put one’s finger on.

At just 25 years old, Jude Kelly has experienced a lifetime of love, loss, growth, accomplishment, and resilience, and through it all, she’s been writing songs. Raised by two pastors in Dunedin, Aotearoa before moving out of home at just 15, Jude turned to songwriting as an outlet to process questions of identity and selfhood – being taught to see the world through the lens of God, whilst coming to grips with the world on her own terms.

Her sonic world branches out from her foundation in soulful pop, incorporating Western/Americana and folk elements to create a refined soundscape that is uniquely her own.
