The project of Gadigal-based pop artist, DJ and model Karvesh Pillai, Kavi’s music fuses the grit of club dance-floors and pop sensibilities to backdrop his lyrical explorations of introspection, love and identity. Charting the trajectory of a crush, Kavi’s debut EP KRUSHED! traversed the high-octane to the ethereal, drawing comparisons to the work of hyperpop pioneers Charli XCX, Shygirl and Doss. The project saw Kavi nominated for ‘Next Big Thing’ at FBi Radio’s 2022 SMAC Awards, alongside praise from PAPER Magazine, VICE, Rolling Stone and more. Across broadcast, the release saw support from MTV, triple j, triple j Unearthed and community radio, plus Spotify playlisting on Fresh Finds (Malaysia & Singapore) and Nina Las Vegas’ Track IDs. Most recently, Kavi has featured alongside Jamaica Moana on HANDSOME’s track ‘EGO’ – part of her newest mixtape Every Second We Try.

Kokoroko first formed in 2014 when Sheila Maurice-Grey (trumpet/flugelhorn/vocals) and Onome Edgeworth (percussion) met on an arts trip in Kenya, bonding over their shared tastes in music. A desire to connect young people in the African diaspora with genres like Afrobeat and Highlife would also fuel the band’s genesis. Before long they were playing gigs, riding a wave of the then nascent “London jazz scene”. In 2018, their breakthrough was secured when the sparse ‘Abusey Junction’ was included on Gilles Peterson’s ‘We Out Here’ compilation. An understated 7 minute ballad recorded in an afternoon, it quickly became a viral hit racking up 75 million streams.
