Sampa The Great

As she embarks on a new era, Sampa The Great finds herself reimagining Zamrock with ‘Can’t Hold Us’, the first taste of a forthcoming 3rd album project. Following on from her acclaimed albums As Above, So Below (2022) and breakout debut The Return (2019), which was met with a series of accolades including three ARIA Awards (from six nominations), Bandcamp’s Album Of The Year, BET’s Amplified Artist of the Month, and the 2019 Australian Music Prize – the latter making Sampa the first artist to win the award twice. Sampa blew up globally, beyond Australia and gracing The Roots Picnic, NPR’s Tiny Desk series, AFROPUNK and, Later….With Jools Holland. Shady Nasty subvert expectations. In a world bound by modded cars, immigrant heritage and digital obsessions, Kevin Stathis, Haydn Green and Luca Watson craft a left-field breed of punk that pushes their formal training in jazz and classical music to its most uncustomary extremes. Influences like King Krule, Low Life and Show Me The Body surface not as reference points, but as undercurrents — absorbed and reconfigured into something unmistakably their own. Early EPs Bad Posture and CLUBSMOKE earned praise from The Guardian, NME, Kerrang!, The Line of Best Fit, DIY, Stereogum and VICE, each showcasing immersive world-building that has shaped a consistent voice over the past seven years.

Marked by a distinctive harbour-city twang, TREK — their long-awaited debut album — grapples with the less-than-glamorous hard graft of staying afloat while remaining creatively uncompromised in Sydney. Produced by Kim Moyes of The Presets, the record ventures into more textured, exploratory territory than ever before. Show Me The Body

Julian Cashwan Pratt (founder; banjo and vocals), Harlan Steed (founder; bass), and Jackie McDermott (current drummer) have built a name for their non-traditional, DIY iteration of hardcore, blending subterranean punk and hip hop with urgency. Pratt’s vocals are excretory, with interrogative poetry backed against Steed’s glitchy and caustic electronic experimentation. Their sound blends recklessly captivating production that challenge traditional riffs and melodies – heavy but always honest. Musical activists, fuelling them is the alchemy of family building, the New York City landscape and maintaining a platform for community, expanded their international music community into an independent label, recording studio, and community organising platform CORPUS. Intrinsically from and for the NYC underground, theirs is a legacy of confronting and permanently shifting the rigid limitations of the hardcore genre.

Sidney Phillips

Heralded for her “distinctively Aussie, hyperpop cross lad rap style” (Unearthed), Sidney’s staunch style set the underground ablaze on her debut in 2022. Tracing inspiration from Zyzz to Effy Stonem and Minecraft, Phillips was quickly touted as a welcome shapeshifter and innovator in the scene. Her melancholic gutter rap and distinct turn of phrase – “I’m a trans adlay” – has won over fans in Mallrat to Ninajirachi, with the firm backing of grassroots tastemakers and triple j alike, landing Feature Artist and Bars Of Steel. Member of the Stealthyn00b collective, she remains loyal to the community she wears on her polo, feeding them with a persistent stream of rapidfire mixtapes. Her influence is already referential – Sidney Phillips is a new star of the Australian rap underground.

Raised in the sticks north of Brisbane in Morayfield, now based between Gubbi Gubbi and Wurundjeri Land in Melbourne, she is a true child of the internet. Grinding her own twist on pluggnb with cloud rap and digicore – “trying to put a label on it is futile” (Junkee) – her sold out shows are fiercely packed out with young fans reaching spiritual epiphanies and shouting lyrics back with big grins. Hot off a boot-raising Golden Plains Festival debut, she has previously performed across RISING, Vivid Sydney, Soft Centre, co-headline toured with Shady Nasty and supported Allday.

Ski Team‘s (aka Lucie Lozinski) new album Burnout/Boys is due January 23. For this music, she teamed up with producer Philip Weinrobe (Adrianne Lenker, Westerman, Buck Meek, & many more) and Josh Bonati (Wild Nothing, Sufjan Stevens, Mac DeMarco) for mastering.

Taking a leave of absence form her career as an award-winning writer to make the forthcoming album, Ski Team set out to balance high agency with acceptance and observation; you can’t fix everything, and most things fall apart, and there’s an unknown balance to taking action and letting life crumble in due course; making room for the unknown.

A lot of Burnout/Boys is about work — uncertainty about the value of what’s created; a desire to be a human even while optimizing for efficiency and good experiences.
