Hataałii (pronounced: hah – toth – lee) — the 21 year old artist born Hataałiinez Wheeler in Phoenix, AZ and raised in Window Rock, AZ, the capital of Navajo Nation — announces Waiting For A Sign, his new album due out September 13 on Dangerbird Records.

Waiting For A Sign is Hataałii’s second album for Dangerbird following 2023’s Singing Into Darkness and, counting an array of self-released projects, his sixth album since 2019. He’s got fans at Aquarium Drunkard (who called him “a master at conjuring a kind of Southwestern saudade”) and was shouted out by Mac DeMarco on The Adam Friedland Show.

Singing Into Darkness won plaudits from SPIN (who called him “2023’s breakout star”), FLOOD (“Hataałii is utterly charming, disarmingly approachable, and delightful in his playfulness”), and KCRW, and was named one of Aquarium Drunkard’s favorite albums of the year. Alongside his music, Hataałii has also published a poetry chapbook, spinning his words out onto pages rather than in song.

With Waiting For A Sign, Hataałii’s careful, artful, perhaps unconscious topicality — his ability to write songs that don’t proselytize or scold but prioritize depth and uncanny particularities and the desire to know the unknowable — marks him as a genuinely thrilling songwriter, someone whose prolific and imaginative output demands close appreciation.

Carriers’ — the project helmed by Cincinnati, Ohio’s Curt Kiser — music has become something of an Ohio talisman, and Curt a true hometown hero. “I have a beautiful, symbiotic relationship with Cincinnati,” he says. Some of Cincy’s most enduring civic entities agree.

During the fall 2024 NFL season, the Cincinnati Bengals tapped him to play a set during a Monday Night Football game. He and his dad (“trust me, he shreds”) rocked out in front of 60,000 fans. Shake It! Records, one of The Queen City’s most beloved local vinyl shops, is working with Carriers on a series of special vinyl LPs. John Curley of Cincinnati alt-rock legends The Afghan Whigs recorded Now Is The Time For Loving Me, Yourself & Everyone Else at his studio. And, finally the Carriers project recently signed to Brassland, an esteemed Brooklyn label co-founded by one of Cincinnati’s most renowned 21st century cultural exports, The National. (That band’s drummer Bryan Devendorf contributed to Curt’s last LP and, in return, Curt did session work on The National’s pair of 2023 albums.)

Love for Carriers extends well beyond Cincinnati city limits. Carriers has opened up for the likes of Big Thief and Damien Jurado and, in summer 2024, nabbed opening slots on tours with Band Of Horses and Fruit Bats. Sharon Van Etten even listed Carriers in the “Recommended Listening” section of the liner notes for her 2019 LP Remind Me Tomorrow.

“When I was 19 years old, I looked to the heavens and asked what I should do with my life,” says Kiser. “I sat on my porch in Cincinnati’s Camp Washington neighborhood and proceeded to write one of the first songs I’d ever written on my own. It’s taken a few hundred songs to feel confident in it, but I’m there now.”

Perhaps we’ll hear more from Carriers’ ever-expanding songbook in 2025.

Altin Gün — “Amsterdam’s finest Turkish psych revivalists” (Pitchfork) whose experimental vision of rock and folk music has led them to world tours, opening slots for Tame Impala and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Coachella and Primavera festival stages, and even a GRAMMY nomination — are releasing Garip, their sixth album, on February 20 on ATO Records.

Garip — which translates to “strange” in English — is a loving tribute to Neşet Ertaş, a beloved icon of Anatolian music who carried the spirit of the ashik folk tradition into the modern era. Ertas was a gifted singer, lyricist, and bağlama virtuoso who recorded more than 30 albums and wrote hundreds of songs — some of which were famously recorded by the likes of Bariş Manço and Selda Bağcan.

Altin Gün recast these songs of longing, heartache, and resilience with the freewheeling verve that has kept them on the cutting-edge of 21st century psychedelic music. They even collaborated with the Stockholm Studio Orchestra to lend a luxuriant, sophisticated feel to various tracks, with arrangements inspired by Egyptian popular music, Turkish Arabesque, and swooning mid-century French and Italian pop.

Raised in Paris by an African-American jazz saxophonist father and a Franca-Spanish mother who lived for music, Crystal grew up on tour listening to a rotating soundtrack of Sly & The Family Stone, Kelis, Macy Gray, John Coltrane, and more. By the age of 13, she’d gone viral as part of Gucci Gang – not the Hip Hop supergroup – a teenage fashion-influencer foursome bringing a Gen Z perspective to the Parisian fashion space. Vogue, I-D, Vice, Dazed, and more, took notice of their vision, but the foursome was quickly motivated to give back to other young women and use their influence for good. The collective started ‘Safe Place,’ an online platform that helps gives voice to people who have suffered sexual abuse and harassment.

Performance in all its forms has always been intrinsic in Ayesha’s life, from adolescence – learning drums and piano – through to her breakout in Netflix’s recent Heartbreak High, which reached #5 in Netflix’s top TV shows globally. For the rising creative, music and songwriting remained at the forefront of her creative output as she strives for humility and grit in all aspects of her craft. Her earlier single ‘Eulogy’ received praise across SBS’ The Feed and Spice radio program, Rolling Stone, Clash Music, NME, Wonderland, Frankie Magazine, rage and more commending Ayesha’s enduring candour. A deep consideration for authentic storytelling and grit continues to guide her work in perhaps music’s most synthetic genre. A refreshing feat is how Madon continues to captivate fans in every format she dabbles – an ability to consistently keep it real backed with a desire to build a career of integrity.

Hailing from Louisville, KY, Arrested Youth broke out in the late 2010s with songs that combined a propulsive sound that straddled alternative rock, punk, and hip-hop with an unvarnished perspective on mental health and the unique challenges of 21st century living. The recovery was lengthy and brutal, thrusting Johnson into a period of reckoning with his own mortality, his personal values, and his own artistic authenticity.

As his health recovered, Johnson felt re-energized, both philosophically and musically. Taking on life with fresh eyes, he embraced what felt like a more honest musical approach to Arrested Youth, one that felt less like him performing what he thought audiences and the industry wanted and more like a true expression of his inner self.

“I’ve always believed in the power of authenticity in music. For me, this album is not just a collection of songs – it’s a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. While writing and recording Too Late to Start Over, my intention was to create an album that people could relate to on a deeply personal level – songs that offered them solace in their own journey. This album chronicles my life over the past few years, and I hope my story serves as a source of strength for others.”

ANNIE & THE CALDWELLS are a family from West Point, Mississippi that plays a powerful disco soul, led by Annie Caldwell (who sings) and her husband of the last fifty years Willie Joe Caldwell, Sr. (who plays guitar). Their music won’t only move you spiritually but emotionally as well — with songs that are as much at home in a church of God as in the church of the dance floor.

Annie is backed by daughters Deborah Caldwell Moore, Anjessica Caldwell and goddaughter Toni Rivers; their eldest son Willie Jr. is on the bass and youngest son Abel Aquirius is on the drums.

They generally play on weekends — so for their day jobs Annie runs a clothing store, Willie Jr. drives a forklift, Abel Aquirius drives hospital patients, Anjessica works in customer care for an insurance company, Toni is an elementary school teacher, and Deborah does hair.

Can’t Lose My (Soul) [Luaka Bop, 2025], their new album 40 years in the making, has already gotten rave reviews in MOJO and The Guardian.
