PRAISE FOR 700 Feel

“700 Feel specialise in sexy, low-lit dance music that recalls the champagne-soaked minimal house of The Soft Pink Truth and Loraine James”

The Guardian Australia

“An explosive force that is constantly evolving”

FBi Radio

“700 FEEL uses countless samples, from countless genres, to create interesting and unique textures, taking it back to OG DJ days when all you’d have is a few vinyls, a tabletop, and a willingness to push the boundaries of sound”

VICE

“A class act"”

Dave Ruby Howe (triple j Unearthed)

“Really tapping into that strange, weirdness you wanna hear in the early, early hours of the morning. I love the glitchy, hip hop, industrial feel to it.”

Muscle Memories is out now, buy/stream

Volume 1 here and Volume 2 here.

Rounding out a stream of buzzy live show appearances at SXSW Sydney, MODE Festival, and more, 700 Feel today reveal the full spectrum of their debut EP series Muscle Memories, with Volume 1 and 2 out now. LISTEN TO VOLUME 1 HERELISTEN TO VOLUME 2 HERE.

Speaking to the moment of their formal debut, 700 Feel highlight the process behind ‘Mise En Place feat. Pei’, sharing “This track came about through our love for Cumbia music and especially all the people out there experimenting with it in the club setting or through Chopping and Screwing it. Naming the track ‘Mise En Place’ started as a joke after a session with our longtime friend and collaborator Joji Malani AKA Pei. Almost like we did all the prep and made all the elements that day in order to execute the track when the time came to it. It felt very familiar to us spending time in and around kitchens.”

700 Feel is an experience of sound, sight, and sense, with Muscle Memories serving as the vessel for their virtuosity fully established. Bound by a spirited purpose in the sanctity of kinship, meditation, and reflection Volume 1 and 2 unravels 700 Feel’s purview of patience and growth through the double entendre of its title. Composed of their diligent attention to genre – de-constructed and meticulously studied one beat at a time – their manipulation of tension, space and the intensity of feeling warbled into their own 700 Feel specific imprint.

Flexing their melting pot of style and influence from Darkside to DJ Screw, Lee “Skratch” Perry to Godriguez throughout, Volume 1 is led by the broken beat excavation of ‘Familiar Flavours’ includes vocal samples from Archie Mike on ‘Ain’t Shit Changed’ and the poignant ‘Green N’ Grey’ recorded via jail phone alongside field recordings from time spent outside (‘Stroll Thru Malvern Hills’); overheard public transport conversations (‘CDG To Clichy’); and freestyle piano chord progressions from Jonny’s father Stu (‘Play Whatever You Want’ and ‘12AM On Erasmus Bridge’).

Volume 2 expands through the explosive bass of ‘5D Dub’ into the extended release of their triumphant ‘LESSONS GET LEARNT‘, re-released into the 10-minute epic ‘Bridges Get Burnt, Lessons Get Learnt’ horns now preluded with the duo’s distorted brand of beats and dub through to ambient musings of transit in Serbia (‘BEG To Toplicin Venac’) and Berlin (‘Sbahn From Heerstrasse’). Closer ‘Mise En Place feat. Pei’ drifts in and out of the phrase “I cannot give you what you’re asking for” into a cumbia-laced, experimental bass moment.

Covering what they consider “the real beginning of the exploration of our sound,” Muscle Memories Vol. 1 and 2 invites listeners to pause, relish their surroundings, and meditate on what comes to mind. Weaving their own stories and experiences abroad and at home with the universally understood, insular, and communal, the double EP series offers a formal introduction into Jonny Reebok and Myspace Juan’s creative partnership, breathing new life into the quantized nature of electronic music unraveling their purview of patience and growth along the way.

Of Muscle Memories’ genesis, 700 Feel reveal, “Quietly experimenting throughout the years has made working together feel second nature to us. The main idea we were trying to explore in this album is the double meaning of the title “Muscle Memories”. We found ourselves stuck inside, like everyone else, with nothing to do but work on our craft. This series is us finding our sound which we’ve developed that only comes from doing your “10,000 hours” so to speak. We got that 700 Feel muscle memory.

“The other meaning of the title refers to memories and experiences that run deep into our bones, muscles, and our very being. We symbolised experiences like these through the little snippets of field recordings from an overseas trip. We spent a lot of time together exploring new genres, bouncing new tracks off each other (mostly in airports), and thinking about which ones we could blend together to make something new and exciting. Left alone with your thoughts, your hopes, your dreams, we all have to face them one way or another, in order to overcome them.”

Met with exponential growth across streaming including Spotify’s Portal, Fresh Finds Global and Experimental, undertones, Genre Glitch, Bleeps^glitches, Night Shift, Quirktronica, Brain Food, Deep Listening and more, Muscle Memories continues to be met with praise across Pilerats, Music Feeds, 2SER, SYN, including Packet Album on FBi Radio for Volume 1 and The Guardian’s acclaim for their “remarkable talent for controlling chaos,” what remains certain is 700 Feel’s continued ability to transcend from their cult status. Stay tuned for the next 700 Feel live experience, soon gracing the heritage listed White Bay Power Station for the Biennale of Sydney’s Art After Dark: Music program in collaboration with Phoenix Central Park in April 2024.
