Today, the ascendant Chinatown alt-pop group, lifelong community organizers, Zohran canvassers, fighters for immigrant’s rights, and an irresistible voice to be heard, Chanpan, releases their new EP, endlessly, via EQT. Collaborators on the record – folks who put their weight fully behind this trio – include Alec Ness (Brittany Howard, Paris Texas, Corbin), Frankie Scoca (New Jeans, V of BTS, Sevdaliza), Aire Atlantica (SZA, Doechii, King Princess, Obongjayar), to name a few. Listen to endlessly here.
endlessly is an irresistible piece of work almost suspended in this very moment in time; in a climate full of so much suffering comes an often deceptively soft-spoken soundscape that bleeds into the dance floor with ease and riles up the masses. endlessly is wrapped up with an agenda that overlaps with the trio’s lifelong work in community organizing/advocating for those who aren’t able to exercise the heft of their own voices: immigrants in the US, communities in Myanmar, union-makers in the US; they’re deeply entwined with labor organizing, canvas for and work on campaigns for candidates they believe in (Zohran Mamdani, Bernie Sanders). All of this work is only amplified by the community they’re building here in NYC and beyond through their music; the lyrical depth alone sets them in a category of their own.
Of endlessly, the band says, “endlessly, from start to finish, is a lesson in recognizing despair & building the hope to save ourselves from it. We created a concept record that takes the listener through a journey from the first track to the last.”
Across the EP, you get sonic whiffs of Stereolab in its prime that digs up a deep nostalgia you didn’t know was there. You get glimpses of a gamer’s dream on “luigi’s mansione,” produced with Aire Atlantica, influenced by the Nintendo Gamecube title of a similar name and a young observer’s glitchy, real-time perspective of a potential turning point of late stage capitalism, while also getting the sense of community and care they exhibit in their day to day lived on “gaia,” which features The Spirit of New Orleans Gospel Choir. The closing track “:D” has a chorus that’s undeniably Spice Girls Coded, but a bass line breakdown on the bridge and a spoken word pre-chorus that will have you trying your hardest to figure out which of your favorite early 00’s movie soundtracks this song was on.
You can also find glimmers of Moby and N.E.R.D. cozied right up alongside Pink Pantheress, FCUKERS and Syd; oscillating between sophisticated piano flourishes and club-worthy beats. They fit in busking in the streets of Chinatown, playing VOGUE-worthy weddings, just as much as they can sell out LA’s most watched new club.
Over the last two years, Chanpan has already earned support from VOGUE, NYTimes, Numéro Tokyo, Brooklyn Magazine, Ones To Watch, The Luna Collective, and more. The trio is made up of Grace Dumdaw and twin brothers Lance and Matthew Tran. Chanpan’s music blends the dance pop of PinkPantheress, jazzy soul of Hiatus Kaiyote, and superstar spunk of NewJeans into a brand new sound.
