Today, fresh off the release of their wildly acclaimed debut album Can’t Lose My (Soul), West Point, Mississippi’s Annie & The Caldwells announce a new collection of mixes, I Was Living In a World of Sin (Mixes Part I), and share a new remix of “I Made It” from the producer duo musclecars, a sunny house classic meets soul gospel like they don’t make anymore. Following a winter European tour that culminated in a sold-out London show at Church Of Sound, Annie & The Caldwells are bringing their kinetic live show around the globe, full North American routing below. Listen to “I Made It (A musclecars Production)” here, and listen to / purchase Can’t Lose My (Soul) here.

Following the February release of a remix by The Gallery and Studio 54 resident, Nicky Siano (the first remix from the dance legend in more than a decade), “I Made It (A musclecars Production)” puts the Caldwells in a new house context, accentuating the dance groove running through all of Can’t Lose My (Soul) and bridging the ecstatic euphoria of church congregations and nightclub revelers alike.

Of the collab, the musclecars say, “We quickly fell in love with the original from the groovy bassline to the choir vocals. We thought it’d be fitting to put our own spin on it, while paying homage to those jive brothers from Tulsa. The uplifting keys paired with the punch of the drums, rounded out with that organ…this one is sure to bring a joyful noise!”

The songs on Can’t Lose My (Soul), while propelled by vibrant, body-moving music, deal with heavy themes of spirituality, struggle, and redemption, all informed by their experiences as an intergenerational family run by women. In these passionate performances, their personal stories transcend to a state of universal parable and salvation-driven ecstasy, resulting in the kind of communal uplift any preacher or DJ could envy. We also get downtown luminary Justin Strauss’ sweaty, syrupy remix of “I Made It” — as well as disco legend Nicky Siano’s full “Wooden Dance Floor Mix”, and Kornél Kovács’s house banger, “Wrong,” bringing the spirit of the church straight to the club.

“I was blown away when I first heard the original version of ‘Wrong’,” says Kovács. “That minimal production and steady bass groove is exactly my vibe, but above all, it was Deborah’s voice that floored me, as well as the background singers. One of the greatest vocal performances I’ve heard, let alone worked with. I knew that had to stay front and center and ended up replacing all other elements, changing the instrumental entirely. The result is a club-ready take that’s become a highlight in my recent DJ sets.”

“It’s a family affair,” said Nicky Siano, whose classic, old-school danceable RnB remix of the Caldwells’ song “Wrong,” also appears on the new EP. “it’s a deeper connection… It’s amazing chemistry. And you don’t get that anymore.” The family has been overwhelmed and moved by such endorsements. “It’s been so wonderful,” said Annie. “It’s hard to say how special it’s been, hard to put it into words, because everything has been so beautiful. We’re just so glad and so fortunate to be here today.”

The new music has garnered overwhelming support among fellow artists, including The Avalanches, David Byrne, Cornershop, Gabriels, Hot Chip, J. Rocc, Moor Mother, but none of the endorsements have been as powerful as that of Sir Elton John, who played Annie & the Caldwells’ “Wrong” on his celebrated Rocket Hour radio show on Apple Music. “A MUST album. You must get that album,” he said. In a four star review in The Guardian, in Alexis Petridis said, “These are great, powerful, moving songs…You don’t need to share the Caldwells’ faith to find something powerful and inspiring in that, particularly given the current climate, which can easily incline you towards hopelessness; something steeped in tradition seems apropos right now. You should listen to Can’t Lose My (Soul) purely on musical terms. Moreover, it’s an album you might need.”

ABOUT ANNIE & THE CALDWELLS

Annie & the Caldwells is a family band of three generations, which was formed by their matriarch Annie Caldwell to keep her kids out of trouble. Their sound incorporates music the next generation loved — The Gap Band, Chaka Kahn, Bootsy Collins — infusing their disco gospel with grit and street savvy.

For two decades, the constellation of family members in The Caldwells has been more or less the same as they play together on weekends and hold down day jobs. Annie (The Matriarch) is a member of the Staples Jr. Singers and owner and proprietor of Caldwell Fashions, a beloved staple in downtown West Point for women’s clothing and church outfits since the ’80s. Then it’s Joe (her guitar-player husband of fifty years); sons Willie Jr. (bass) who drives a forklift and Abel Aquirius (drums) who drives hospital patients. Daughter Anjessica (vocals) works in customer care for an insurance company, goddaughter Toni (vocals) is an elementary school teacher, and daughter Deborah (vocals) does hair.
