PRAISE FOR Behind You

“It's punk, but it's also so much more than that”

Claire Mooney (triple j Unearthed)

“Unique blend of punk, rap and electronica”

Resident Advisor

“Arguably one of the country’s most electrifying and fascinating experimental outfits”

Rolling Stone Australia

“At no point is it quiet, with bellowing bass and smashing drums catapulting throughout. At no point is it patient, as they come right out the gate with fiery raps and a shouty cadence”

Acclaim Magazine

“Behind You make music that will have you losing control of your breath”

fbi.radio

“Amidst the murky diatribes you’re still in store for their signature assault of the senses with plenty of dark-techno and drum n’ bass breakdowns, aggressive tonal punches and a low-end thats going to be felt far and wide”

AMRAP

“Behind You break all the rules in the best way possible”

ABC Arts

“Behind You blends together the diverse styles of each of their collaborating artists with the help of slightly unhinged jump cuts, a little AI smarts and the textural softness of a Hi-8 camera”

Friendship Bracelet is out now, buy/stream here

Daring post-punk three-piece Behind You have at last shared their latest project, Friendship Bracelet, flanked with a new music video for its title track, independently out now. LISTEN HERE + WATCH HERE.

The once esoteric outfit have continued their crossover on this latest project. Joining recent single ‘Bloom ft. GAUCI’, supported across Wire (Cover), Fresh Finds Indie, triple j Unearthed playlisting and more, includes ‘Sublime Nerve Damage’, a slow-burning doomer oscillating between radical self-confidence and self-doubt. Elsewhere, ‘Pacemaker’ stuns as the twisted result of what once was a quest for self-love, now morphed into idolatry, obsession and unchecked ego that demands worship. As a whole, it’s a cunning relay of a gendered experience pushed to the limits of binary social norms.

Today’s title track focus pummels with mania, induced from Sinus Node Dysfunction, pushing any measure necessary to seek human connection. The band shares, “This song is about searching for connection in an overstimulating, overcrowded digital world: ‘I just got a friend on craigslist tryna get friends in higher places’. It’s a fool’s errand, because truly, the place B.Y finds connection is on the stage in front of a crowd. ”

The accompanying music video, directed by frontman Harry Welsh, bridges those two worlds. “The video emulates a live show – a front row seat to the raw, visceral performance we try to bring on stage. Flashes of stock footage bring the digital bombardment that we all experience day to day. As the two worlds collide, we catch brief moments of connection – whether positive or negative – split across the screen in sprawling slow motion. It’s disparate, jarring but manages to find poetry between the hyperstimulating performance.”

Friendship Bracelet bellows with Behind You’s creative strength throughout. As by design, reflective of the tie Harry Welsh, Joe Goddard and Dylan Clay are bound with; and by custom, on record and the live arena – purpose-built to be worn out and pushed to their fullest extent in honour of the labour in its making, yet wholly reflective of their robust partnership. Frenetic soundscapes and dissolutions of character and culture, 808s and beatscapes side by side with rugged vocals. Clear in execution and work ethic, visibly felt – visions of RSI, sweat, chapped lips – though never unruly.

Agitated punk dotted with digitalism and coarse, alt-hip hop influenced vocals – theirs is a sound of dark romance. Behind You’s brand of controlled furore channels local legends as Low Life and Total Control with the endeavour of Friendship Bracelet dotting their influences in IDLES to V*agra Boys throughout. Their singular practice collides sound and video to birth a surreal fantasy, where nihilism and extreme subversions of character, distorted with bad habits, beg the consideration of humanity’s base values and behaviours.

Rising above the arcane prescriptions of their sound, Behind You have collected critical acclaim from a variety of champions in Rolling Stone, ABC Arts, Resident Advisor, VICE, triple j’s Home & Hosed, RAGE, Acclaim, fbi.radio and others. Connecting the dots of their community in features with newcomers as 1300’s Rako, Too Birds’ Teether, Grasps, to underground leaders as BAYANG (tha Bushranger) and Marcus Whale, Behind You promise to push subculture to widespread recognition.
