Body Type’s latest album Tally has arrived, out today via Poison City Records (AU/NZ) and p(doom) (ROW). This weekend, Body Type will take to Melbourne’s SoundMerch and Sydney’s Prop Records for a string of free, all ages, in-store performances and album signings. Marking ten years together for Sophie McCommish, Georgia Wilkinson-Derums, Annabel Blackmanand Cecil Coleman as Body Type, Tally is the sound of a band maturing and taking stock, but where wit and playfulness still reign supreme. Here, the everyday bits of life — taking a lift up to a boyfriend’s apartment, divvying up a bill — are transformed into sublime and surreal thrills.

Partially inspired by sculptor, painter and printmaker Louise Borgeois, Tally marks the first time the band has worked with a producer, helmed by Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa (Courtney Barnett, Kim Gordon) and recorded in LA at Velveteen Laboratory Studios in the aftermath of the 2025 fires. The charged landscape of the city seeped into the record through warped instrumentation, swirling, multilayered vocals and Lynchian imagery.

Tally is a luminous rock record, chronicling mundanity’s mystical implications, the deformations of romance and love’s confounding elasticity. The mental twists of love—the sacrifices we make, the boundaries we push—are a constant throughout the record. Elsewhere, absurdity is the order of the day, combining big, jagged riffs, moody post-punk and 60s pop into Body Type’s most self-assured album yet.

Consider the singles ‘And What Else?’ a bratty, bittersweet call-and-response anthem about the pleasures and pitfalls of fishing for compliments. ‘Sick Bag’ explores the pains of holding onto a doomed relationship, through a series of glorious, grotesque images while ‘Mulberry’ is a rollicking marvel of free-association from purple fruit to Prince, bruises and the heavens.

Elsewhere ‘Tally’ is a hilarious, Pavement-inspired lament, awash with wry retorts and shouts, on the humiliation of trying to fetch money off a friend who owes you. Still after all this time Body Type dabbled in a first, with the menacing and angular ‘Eye Is A Mouth Is A Face’, as the first song written entirely collaboratively. They tackle the inextricability of repulsion and desire, with lyrics informed by Bourgeois’ psychoanalytic, text-based works.

In their own words, Body Type share “Eye Is A Mouth Is A Face is the first full song we’ve written entirely collaboratively, so it’s fitting that we are releasing it on the day that marks the release of our third album. The song was lyrically inspired by the Louise Bourgeois exhibition at AGNSW – ‘Has The Day Invaded The Night or Has The Night Invaded The Day?’ Speaking of days, nights and dreamers, here is another look into the uncanny lives of us…”

Where their keen adoration of Feminist text and history never falters, and reinvention at the heart of each release to their name, Tally is Body Type as observational and gloriously off-kilter as ever. This August Body Type will debut Tally across a run of national headline shows before heading to the UK and Europe in October supporting Courtney Barnett. Spanning 13 dates, the tour stops in Berlin, Cologne, Utrecht, Brussels, Luxembourg, Paris, Glasgow, Gateshead, Nottingham, Manchester, Bristol, and two nights at London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town.
