PRAISE FOR Caroline Polachek

“Desire, I Want to Turn Into You is an album to get comfortably lost in, knowing there will always be some familiar motif that pops up to reorient you. It’s Caroline’s island, and we’re just walking circles around its wild and wonderful perimeter.”

“Given she’s spent over a decade creating some of the cleverest and most charming experimental pop out there, it was cheering to see Caroline Polachek’s latest album, Desire, I Want to Turn Into You, receive the overwhelmingly rapturous response it deserved earlier this year.”

“Nothing here shines brighter (or satisfies more) than Polachek’s own exquisite voice.”

“Her curious spirit, as well as her undeniable talent as a vocalist and arranger, make Desire, I Want To Turn Into You a kinetic example of what happens when pop sets out to transcend its own limits”

Rolling Stone

“The culmination of her 18 years in music is an unrivaled ability to reach the genre’s most surprising corners.”

“Polachek reaches a new peak by being able to play with the concept of transformation and versatility on this album.”

“From the moment Caroline Polachek comes swinging into “Welcome To My Island” — fiercely, rapturously wailing in a way that connects the dots between Björk and Mariah at jagged angles — Desire, I Want To Turn Into You never ceases to delight.”

“The real star of the show: Polachek’s exceptional, acrobatic voice, a truly special instrument that she has a complete mastery of”

Sydney Morning Herald (★★★★)

“Unidentifiable. Pioneer. Both words apply to Polachek.”

Harper's Bazaar Australia

“If there’s someone who we trust to unearth new and exciting insights about the curvatures of desire, it’s Polachek”

In celebration of the anniversary of the original album’s release on Valentine’s Day, the deluxe edition of Desire, I Want To Turn Into You is out now via Perpetual Novice / The Orchard. LISTEN HERE.

Adding multiple new pages to 2023’s pop bible, Polachek has now pushed the sonic hallmarks of the original album into even more exaggerated extremes, including deep cut nods to songs that inspired the album: an electric cover of Operating Theatre’s ‘Spring Is Coming With A Strawberry In The Mouth’ (Produced by A.G. Cook), and the emotional drum & bass track ‘Coma’, which is an extended rework of Default Genders’ ‘Pharmacoma (for Ben Deitz)’. Both covers are in the journeying spirit of her most beloved songs like ‘Billions’ and ‘Door’.

Polachek also rearranges one of the album’s fan favourites, ‘I Believe’ (Acoustic Version) co-produced by Ariel Rechtshaid, and joins forces with longtime friend Weyes Blood on a proggy crystalline duet arrangement of Desire’s power ballad, ‘Butterfly Net’. The deluxe edition also includes new mysteriously cinematic songs ‘Meanwhile’ and ‘Gambler’s Prayer’, and the now-classic banger, ‘Dang’, which premiered live as a surrealist powerpoint presentation on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. WATCH HEREDesire, I Want To Turn Into You: Everasking Edition offers a surprising array of vivid perspectives into Polachek’s extended universe, pushing the album’s sounds and influences into clearer focus and dizzying extremes.

To say that the standard edition of Desire, I Want To Turn Into You took the world by storm would be an understatement. Aside from securing a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album – Non-Classical and a Brit Award nomination for Solo International Artist, her sophomore album has brought Polachek to be featured in NPR’s Tiny Desk Series, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, all while achieving 110 million streams worldwide and featuring on Vogue, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Billboard, The Fader, Consequence, I-D, Stereogum, The New York Times, Elle, and Variety’s Best of 2023 lists; placing #1 on year-end lists by publications such as Pitchfork, DIY, Exclaim, DORK, and Double J. Desire, I Want To Turn Into You also ranks #2 on Pitchfork and The New York Times’ “Best Albums of 2023” lists and #3 on The Guardian and Rough Trade’s Best Albums of 2023 lists.

Additionally, she brought her headline tour, The Spiraling Tour, across the globe to sold-out venues like Radio City Music Hall and The Sydney Opera House and claimed the direct opening spot on Dua Lipa’s 2022 North American Future Nostalgia Tour. From Coachella to Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, Primavera, All Points East, Governors Ball, Pitchfork Music Festival, and Outside Lands, Caroline’s live shows have aided in the dominance of Desire, I Want To Turn Into You in the musical zeitgeist.
