CD shares a future twist on R&B with ‘Ish You’, debut EP Blue Violet coming soon
Naarm/Melbourne R&B phenom CD today shares the release of her latest single ‘Ish You’. LISTEN HERE.
Bringing the warm nostalgia of female-led 90’s R&B into a 21st Century bouncing bassline, ‘Ish You’ steers CD’s trademark soulful sound into a new direction. Tugging at the heartstrings, it speaks to the sentiment of relationship patterns, channelling the avant-gardism of Erika de Casier and sultriness of Ojerime in a dedication to contemporary, electronically-tinged R&B.
With intimate lines like “I need something more official, really trying to avoid another issue” sung through a self-assured melody and backed by shifting double tempo-style breaks, ‘Ish You’ captures CD’s intent to make every line feel as though it’s been drawn out from the depths of her mind. Of the single, CD reveals “This song is all about movement. Not only in its pace, but lyrically it’s about recognising patterns and habits that no longer serve you and moving away from them. It’s obviously really different from anything else I’ve released but this is a fun one and I really love it. Being so early in my career, I’m still very much in the experimental phase and I’m enjoying trying out different sounds.”
An intuitive approach to songwriting, all will soon culminate in CD’s forthcoming debut EP Blue Violet, a release that shows the best-of-all-worlds in her craft over the past three years. Joining ‘Ish You’ is ‘Catcha Grip’ with PANIA and her more recent single ‘Love Language’, which landed support from press and radio tastemakers alike, including triple j, triple j Unearthed, FBi Radio, BBC Radio 1Xtra (Alternative Sound), NTS Radio (Rhythm Section), Acclaim Magazine, Junkee amongst others.
Hailing from Naarm/Melbourne’s Western suburbs, CD’s evolved palette that touches on influences of jazz, neo-soul and hip has left many enamoured by a sound that’s of her own kind. As an established and in-demand vocalist, songwriter, and collaborator, her musical candour has served her on anthems including ‘Drop’ with Gold Fang, ‘ONE CALL AWAY’ with Nikodimos and ‘IDM‘ with RAY OTW, as well as being a key member of underground Melbourne music collective Picked Last. On the live show front, she recently supported Erika de Casier on the Eora/Sydney leg of her Australian tour, asserting her position as one of Australia’s most compelling new acts.
