Introducing Chinatown Slalom; listen to their debut album WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? via September Recordings

June 20 2019

What do you do when you’ve made a debut record/project/album/mixtape – or whatever description feels right in 2019 – so brilliantly realised and fully formed that it really needs to be heard as one complete start-to-finish, welcome-to-our-world piece of work? In Chinatown Slalom’s case, you follow your instincts and make that project your first ever release. With no previous singles, EPs, videos, features or remixes to their name, today they present their debut record: a ten track album titled Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

Conceptualised, self-produced and recorded in a series of ramshackle digs in their adopted hometown of Liverpool, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? is a perfect introduction to Chinatown Slalom’s kaleidoscopic, hallucinogenic world. The band are Liam, Jake, Ricky and Michael, an inter-dimensional gang of four early-twenties year olds with various backgrounds as choir singers and trumpet players, Soundcloud producers, and fans and marauders of musical history. Over the ten tracks of their debut there’s blissed out, golden hour pop, strange premonitions of other universes, fractured raps, multi-faceted performances and brass instruments. It’s a lot of things, and that’s the point. As their slogan – spray-painted across the walls of their open-all-hours shared house – goes, “Everyone’s Invited”.

To celebrate the release the band have collaborated with photographer and filmmaker Eamonn Freel to create a video for the album’s title track, which features a rare Jai Paul-approved sample and is a deliriously vivid introduction to the four members of the Chinatown Slalom ski team. Evocative of the band’s key components, it’s visually expansive –  “the whole of the universe is our mind, and we’re the thoughts in it,” say the band – while also honing in lyrically on being young, growing up broke but still wanting to experience life. Watch it here.
