Naarm / Melbourne musician Chitra weaves a tender exploration of past relationships on her latest single ‘Close Proximity’, delivering a nuanced meditation on love, memory, and self-discovery. LISTEN HERE.
Drawing inspiration from artists like Molly Burch and Mitski, Chitra’s introspective songwriting on ‘Close Proximity’ resonates with raw emotional honesty, examining how time can both soften and sharpen our memories of past relationships.
Set to feature on her upcoming debut album, the song explores the bittersweet nature of nostalgia. Through carefully crafted lyrics and atmospheric production, ‘Close Proximity’ captures the moment of revelation when rose-tinted memories give way to clearer understanding. John Castle’s nuanced production work creates a sonic landscape that mirrors the song’s emotional journey from clouded perspective to clarity.
Speaking about the making of ‘Close Proximity’, Chitra reveals, “This song emerged from reflecting on an all-encompassing love that completely consumed my ability to see things clearly. It’s about that dangerous tendency to romanticize the past and how that can keep you trapped in patterns that don’t serve you anymore. The moment you realize your perception of someone has been warped by your own mind – and the freedom that comes with finally seeing through that illusion – it’s both devastating and liberating.”
‘Close Proximity’ is set to become a cornerstone of her compelling live performances, having previously supported the likes of Phantastic Ferniture, Vacations, Sorry (UK), and Lisa Mitchell. As Chitra builds toward the release of her debut album, her ability to transform deeply personal experiences into universally resonant stories continues to establish her as one of Australia’s most insightful voices. Produced by John Castle, who has also worked with the likes of Cub Sport, Hatchie, and Angie McMahon, the record promises to further cement Chitra’s reputation for bold, affecting songwriting.
On her 2020 self-titled EP, Chitra navigated the pressures and anxieties of relationships with the grace and dexterity of a dancer, constantly in lockstep with her partner. Described as a “bold and affecting” songwriter by triple j, Chitra quickly won praise and adulation from tastemakers including NME, Triple R and FBi Radio, as well as support slots alongside artists like Lisa Mitchell, Vacations and Jaguar Jonze. Later her single ‘Give Up’ would be praised as a “naturally gifted lyricist” by Tommy Faith, boasting a voice “seemly carved from the indie-folk Mount Olympus” by Dave Ruby Howe on triple j Unearthed, amongst Sniffers, Pilerats, Beat Magazine and more.
