Today, chlothegod — the “charismatic vocalist and clever songwriter, [whose] discography is the perfect marriage between unfiltered soul and cathartic alt-rock” (Pigeons & Planes) with a “vexed, all-consuming presence” (Alternative Press) — shares a music video for “Digging Around,” the lead single from her freshly announced sophomore EP I Feel Different Every Day, out January 17 via EQT.

“Digging Around” is a skittering and joyous pop-punk track that makes a playful spectacle out of attempts at self-transformation. As chlo croons across drums and guitar surging like a heartbeat, she balances the heaviness of all this soul searching with her endlessly effervescent sense of humor, “I’m like 6am construction out your window / Work in progress, just moving too slow.”

Of the track and video, chlothegod says: “‘Diggin Around’ symbolizes the monotonous task of self work. While I often have fallen victim to the pseudo-freedom that inciting chaos brings, I had to take 2 steps back and a deep breath while I reflect on the harm I have caused myself and others. Really uncomfortable but necessary shit. Nothing changes if nothing changes type beat.”

As a follow up to her acclaimed 2023 debut EP Nearly Straight, chlothegod stays sensitive in her storytelling, but the air is much different on I Feel Different Every Day — her rage, messiness, and exhaustion is felt deeply and heard loudly. It’s a document of a woman in her 20s, and chlo comes with a startling candor as she continues to figure out who she is and who she has yet to become. She’s as self aware as ever, and throughout the EP, we’re invited in to uncover and examine her flaws (and likely our own at the same time).

Within the 7 track project, chlo creates tracks with beguiling grooves and rollercoaster vocal ranges (like on “I Swear”); soft guitar strums and stories of childhood trauma (as on the title track); a winking sense of humor that proves she can laugh at herself along the way (“My GF Hates Me”); and passionately dynamic percussive elements (queue the switch halfway through “I Know What Everyone Says”).

I Feel Different Every Day is chlo’s artistic freedom at it’s finest, the product of newfound community and confidence. While touring far and wide for her debut EP last year, she realized her insular songs actually resonate far beyond herself, and as painful as that outward self-reflection can be, chlothegod profoundly proves how freeing it truly is.
