Cody Jon links with Japan’s Sirup for new single ‘2MANYTIMES’ ahead of debut headline show in Tokyo on Dec 9
PRAISE FOR Cody Jon
‘2MANYTIMES’ by Cody Jon and Sirup is out now, buy/stream here.
Ahead of his debut headline show in Japan this December 6, Cody Jon shares a bright collaboration in ‘2MANYTIMES’, featuring Japanese singer-songwriter Sirup. LISTEN HERE.
With Cody’s trademark catchy and anecdotal vulnerability, ‘2MANYTIMES’ deliberates on the theme of escapism and wanting to break free from something holding you in place. Speaking to the frustration of not moving forward and finding yourself stuck in a continual loop in a rapidly changing world, the track is a lyrical ode to living in the present, looking inwards and keeping your head up along the way: “focus on the hopeless, you won’t see tomorrow”.
‘2MANYTIMES’ is a glittery and eclectic display of pop talent backed by a fast-rising star of J-pop Sirup, a frontrunning vocalist who has remixed the likes of Years & Years and performed alongside with BJ the Chigaco Kid, Tom Misch and Yuna. With Sirup’s penchant for classic R&B and Cody’s Y2K-inspired hooks, ‘2MANYTIMES’ came together with Sirup in Japan, Cody in Eora / Sydney and Cody’s frequent collaborator Taka Perry bridging the channel between two countries, in a back-and-forth session.
Cody reveals, “When Sirup reached out and told me he wanted to make a song with me I was so excited! After listening to Sirup’s music, I knew we needed to make something together, I just didn’t know how we could do it with me being in Australia and Sirup in Japan. I told my friend/producer Taka Perry about it and he just happened to be going to Japan next week! I linked Sirup and Taka up and they started making 2MANYTIMES. Taka came back to Sydney and I wrote and recorded my verse and added a bridge. Taka went back to Japan and finished the track off with Sirup. It all happened very quickly. Taka speaks Japanese and was able to translate the lyrics for me and help me write my verse. Taka also helped me learn the chorus which allowed me to sing the chorus in Japanese alongside Sirup.”
Sirup also shares, “I first heard “Dirty Dancing” on Instagram, and thought it was such a good song and immediately became a fan. I was then able to connect with Cody’s producer Taka Perry, and we ended up working on a song together. The process was super smooth; I remember being so blown away when I first heard the verse Cody added to the demo track Taka and I made. Even though Cody and I haven’t been able to meet in person, we would facetime during the songwriting process, and we ended up with an amazing song! Cody and I share a mutual love for 90s and 2000s pop and R&B music, and I think 2MANYTIMES definitely ended up being a merge of our musical chemistry, resulting in a powerful R&B track.”
Since first debuting his temporal mash with ‘dirty dancing’, and ‘Becky’s Plan’ in 2022, Cody Jon’s discography reveals layer after layer to his soundscape world and the development since he first started writing, exploring themes of love and the twists and turns that come in tow. Following his latest release ‘SHOOT!’, ‘2MANYTIMES’ once again showcases Cody’s skills as a vocalist, producer and collaborator, the end result reflecting the best of both worlds from each artist and producer.
Cody Jon continues to amass praise most notably as triple j Unearthed Feature Artist, alongside iHeartRadio, MTV, Early Rising, ELLE Japan amongst others, and his dazzling live show already includes debuts at BIGSOUND, SXSW Austin and SXSW Sydney, as well as his own headline tour following a Tai Verdes tour support, and performances alongside Gretta Ray, Peach PRC, and more. Cody will be soon performing his debut headline show in Tokyo this December, of which he shares “In the past few months I’ve received a lot of love from Japan, my audience over there just continues to grow and grow. This song is a gift to them for being so supportive to me. A lot of their messages say my music brings them happiness and they love to listen to it while studying or on the way to school. I think they will be able to relate to this song”.
