To The Ghosts LP is out now, buy/stream it here.

Cults, the multiplatinum New York duo comprised of multi-instrumentalists Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion have released their fifth studio album, To the Ghosts out now on IMPERIAL. The band temper shadowy cinematic soundscapes with flickering melodic singalongs, perfecting their signature vision with this expansive and anticipated new record — their first new full length studio LP in four years. LISTEN HERE.

“Without knowing it, we’ve spent our whole career building a world of our own,” observes Brian. “We just try to create the emotion that we want to feel. This record is another piece of the picture, but the picture isn’t done yet. We’d be in Cults no matter what. It’s the way we live our lives.”

“This is the first record where I would pick up the microphone and sing whatever I was feeling,” recalls Madeline. “The vocals and the lyrics really helped inform the direction rather than the other way around. Every track brings me back to what I was going through at the time.”

Highlights on To the Ghosts include new track ‘Onions’, as well as recent singles ‘Left My Keys’‘Hung The Moon’ and ‘Crybaby’ – the latter peaking at #1 on Double J’s Most Played, with further support from Frankie Magazine, RUSSH, 10 Magazine among others. News of the album generated excitement among fans and the likes of Pitchfork, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, DORK, The Line of Best Fit and more.

The creative process for the new album began during the pandemic when they started writing music on weekdays from 10am-5pm, with no deadlines or distractions.  Written and recorded in Brian’s apartment, they later brought the music to Los Angeles for further collaboration with longtime producer and trusted creative confidant Shane Stoneback. To the Ghosts was co-produced by Cults & Shane Stoneback, mixed by John Congleton, and mastered by Heba Kadry NYC.

True outliers, Cults persist as the rare phenomenon equally comfortable collaborating with The Weeknd, rap titan J. Cole on his 6x-platinum smash ‘She Knows’, and maverick indie director Jim Jarmusch. Their latest remix of Taylor Swift’s ‘Fortnight’ caught fans by surprise, with Billboard calling it “bubbly” and noting their “expansive universe”, while People.com commented on its “bright instrumentation”.

Cults kick off their U.S. headline tour in August, with a stop at Lollapalooza on August 4th, before supporting Vampire Weekend on their extensive run this spring, and will then head to the UK and EU in November for headline dates. See HERE for a complete Cults tour itinerary.

With over 1.5 billion streams and over 12 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Cults have built a world anchored by four acclaimed albums, and a distinct, mesmerising sound. Their loyal legion of fans includes early devotees, as well as new converts who organically discovered them along the way. Their virality is a testament to the band’s relatable lyricism and authenticity which consistently resonates with audiences. The staple ‘Always Forever’ reached RIAA platinum status, and the track ‘Gilded Lily’ endured as a phenomenon. It took TikTok by storm with 200K-plus “creates” in 2022, and notched a gold certification. They appeared on J. Cole’s 6x-platinum smash ‘She Knows [feat. Cults & Amber Coffman]’ in addition to co-writing with everyone from G-Eazy to Freddie Gibbs. Beyond selling out venues on headline tours and shining on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, they graced the bills of Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, as well as a national tour across Australia for Laneway Festival in 2012.
