Acclaimed duo Cults have shared their latest track, ‘Hung the Moon’. The alt/pop band comprised of multi-instrumentalists Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion are about to release their anticipated new studio album To The Ghosts July 26th on Virgin Music (AU) + Imperial (US). In keeping with Cults cinematic trademark sound, ‘Hung the Moon’ hinges on a sparse beat and loose bassline. Ethereal, airy and haunting it works perfectly as the album closer. Its woozy sway evokes a David Lynchian fever dream as Madeline serenades, “Let it saturate, a love in bloom, I know it’s you, you hung the moon.” Her vocals feedback into a siren’s wail, and the sound dissolves into silence.
“It has a Twin Peaks, roadhouse vibe,” notes Brian. “It’s a sweet nursery rhyme set to an ominous tone. It goes back to the concept of growing up. Life doesn’t stop when you check all of the boxes; it gets crazier. There’s always possibility, adversity, and fun up ahead.”
The first two tracks unveiled from To the Ghosts include ‘Left My Keys‘ and ‘Crybaby‘. Both display their uncanny ability to balance alternative sonic architecture with unassuming pop songcraft. The new music has generated excitement among Cults expansive fanbase along with tastemakers such as Pitchfork, Stereogum, BrooklynVegan, DORK, The Line of Best Fit and more.
True outliers, Cults persist as the rare phenomenon equally comfortable collaborating with The Weeknd, rap titan J. Cole on his 6x-platinum smash ‘She Knows’, and maverick indie director Jim Jarmusch. Earlier this week their remix of Taylor Swift’s ‘Fortnight‘ dropped much to the delight of fans everywhere. Cults commented on social media saying they were “honoured to have been given the opportunity to remix legend Taylor Swift’s song.”
The creative process for To the Ghosts began during the pandemic when the band starting writing music on weekdays from 10am-5pm, with no deadlines or distractions. The album was written and recorded in Brian’s apartment, and then brought to Los Angeles for further collaboration with longtime producer and trusted creative confidant Shane Stoneback. To the Ghosts was co-produced by Cults and Shane Stoneback, mixed by John Congleton, and mastered by Heba Kadry NYC.
Cults will be playing a stretch of high-profile shows including their own U.S. headline summer tour kicking off August 1st, a stop at Lollapalooza on August 4th, and coveted opening slot supporting Vampire Weekend in the fall. See all tour routing details HERE.
With over 1.5 billion streams and over 12 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Cults have built a world anchored by four acclaimed albums, and a distinct, mesmerising sound. Their loyal legion of fans includes early devotees, as well as new converts who organically discovered them along the way. Their virality is a testament to the band’s relatable lyricism and authenticity which consistently resonates with audiences. The staple ‘Always Forever’ reached RIAA platinum status, and the track ‘Gilded Lily’ endured as a phenomenon. It took TikTok by storm with 200K-plus “creates” in 2022, and notched a gold certification. They appeared on J. Cole’s 6x-platinum smash ‘She Knows [feat. Cults & Amber Coffman]’ in addition to co-writing with everyone from G-Eazy to Freddie Gibbs. Beyond selling out venues on headline tours and shining on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, they graced the bills of Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, as well as a national tour across Australia for Laneway Festival in 2012.
