Cults, the multiplatinum New York duo comprised of multi-instrumentalists Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion have dropped their new music video for ‘Onions’ today from their fifth studio album To the Ghosts out now on IMPERIAL. WATCH HERE + LISTEN TO LP HERE.
Directed by Alice Fassi, whose work has been recognised at prestigious film festivals such as Cannes Lions, brought her unique blend of satire and horror to the clip. Madeline plays a tender housewife with a dark side, hiding a sadistic, thrill-seeker within. Brian plays her half-dead counterpart, likely fallen victim to one of Madeline’s homecooked brews. Set in a secluded country home circle 1980, the video unfolds with coloruful cinematography, and a surreal, delightfully macabre charm.
Cults shadowy cinematic soundscapes and flickering melodic singalongs are evident throughout To the Ghosts. The band has perfected their signature vision on the expansive and acclaimed new record. More highlights include ‘Left My Keys‘, ‘Hung The Moon‘ and ‘Crybaby‘. Upon the new music’s release, Paste raved Cults are “at the top of their game”, while GRAMMY.com said the record, “captures everything fans adore about Cults”, and Atwood Magazine raved it’s an album, “with a distinct atmosphere full of fascinatingly spectral production and compelling lyrics.” Watch Cults perform ‘Crybaby’ on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s LateShowMeMusic series HERE.
The band have been on a non-stop whirlwind of live dates. Following To the Ghosts release, they embarked on their own U.S. headline tour in August, with a stop at Lollapalooza, and are now on the road again supporting Vampire Weekend. To wrap up 2024, they head to the UK and EU in November for more headline dates.
The creative process for the new album began during the pandemic when Cults started writing music on weekdays from 10am-5pm, with no deadlines or distractions. Written and recorded in Brian’s apartment, they later brought the music to Los Angeles for further collaboration with longtime producer and trusted creative confidant Shane Stoneback. To the Ghosts was co-produced by Cults and Shane Stoneback, mixed by John Congleton, and mastered by Heba Kadry NYC.
True outliers, Cults persist as the rare phenomenon equally comfortable collaborating with The Weeknd, rap titan J. Cole on his 6x-platinum smash ‘She Knows’, and maverick indie director Jim Jarmusch. Their latest remix of Taylor Swift’s ‘Fortnight’ caught fans by surprise, with Billboard calling it “bubbly” and noting their “expansive universe”, while People.com commented on its “bright instrumentation.”
With over 1.5 billion streams and over 12 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Cults have built a world anchored by four acclaimed albums, and a distinct, mesmerising sound. Their loyal legion of fans includes early devotees, as well as new converts who organically discovered them along the way. Their virality is a testament to the band’s relatable lyricism and authenticity which consistently resonates with audiences. The staple ‘Always Forever’ reached RIAA platinum status, and the track ‘Gilded Lily’ endured as a phenomenon. It took TikTok by storm with 200K-plus “creates” in 2022, and notched a gold certification. They appeared on J. Cole’s 6x-platinum smash ‘She Knows [feat. Cults & Amber Coffman]’ in addition to co-writing with everyone from G-Eazy to Freddie Gibbs. Beyond selling out venues on headline tours and shining on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, they graced the bills of Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, as well as a national tour across Australia for Laneway Festival in 2012.
