Eora / Sydney-based transcendental utopian techno project DeepFaith share their debut EP, titled GLORIA IN TUMULTU, VERITAS IN FRAGORE PROPHETUS INSANUM. The EP is also accompanied by a special pink vinyl edition due out tomorrow for Record Store Day (April 20), released via Impressed Records. LISTEN HERE.
Translating their online mischief into a visceral, punk-infused performance of surrealistic camp and sinewy grooves, GLORIA IN TUMULTU, VERITAS IN FRAGORE PROPHETUS INSANUM is inspired by a real world excursion of their sonic undertaking – think the aural equivalent of a hand reaching out of your phone screen to disrupt the nature of endless doom scrolling. Captivating as it is strange, the EP threads the elegance of Air with the sonic left turns of the KLF, utilising AI-generated voices to subvert traditional forms and instead summon a cast of ghostly collaborators into a whimsical and demon-like setting.
With the previous electroclash single ‘PATTI SMITH’ garnering support across Numero, 10 Magazine, RAGE, Pilerats and Wonderland, who helmed the track as “Lyrically visceral, vocally erratic and sonically arresting, the new cut is a punk-infused gem that is as entertaining as it is odd”, DeepFaith showed their ability to straddle the line between confrontational and alluring. Now they present a brand new sphere of music, welcoming four brand new tracks with ‘SUNSHOWERS666’, a mutation of trance and noise that serves as a beacon for empowerment, ‘EVERYONE’S TALKING AT ME’, a digitally hazy meditation, the harmonious ‘MEOWMEOW’ and EP spotlight ‘BBURN’, a Berlin-inspired hallucinatory cut.
Speaking to the project’s inspiration, DeepFaith share “Dumpster diving into the depths of the deep web, a toxic avenger pierces through the diamonds. The kingdom of United States collapses. Dust settles. Truth and lies. A tent city, tarps as far as the eye can see. A man playing a washboard with shotgun shells outside a maccas. This all happened recently. Travelling, playing shows. Tour diary. Real life. Content. A spiritual guru, covered in silver and trinkets singing opera standing by a beast of a man, wizard-like in appearance and trapped in a constant Virtual Reality, eyes covered with screens and cameras. A blonde wig wearing mullet punk, indonesian rev head, children of some sort of echochamber revolution online. Gen Alpha+ Devolution continues into some sort of hope. Captured live, printed on wax, pink. clear. Direct.”
DeepFaith is the hybrid art & music project helmed by Australians DANIAL (drummer for Midnight Juggernauts, founder of Siberia Records, and collaborator with the likes of Kirin J Callinan, Alex Cameron, Solange, and Kelsey Lu) and Byron Spencer (the acclaimed multidisciplinary artist who’s helmed projects for Troye Sivan, Lady Gaga, and Dev Hynes). Existing between the realms of DIY electronic and punk, their single ‘DADDY’ (which was was accompanied by a limited run t-shirt collaboration) saw editorial praise across PAPER Magazine, Office, Harper’s Bazaar, RUSSH Magazine, Music Feeds and more, alongside radio support from triple j, FBi Radio and 3RRR locally.
DeepFaith have already begun to build out their practice of transcendental techno utopianism: they’ve brought a “Crypto Digital Opera” to the Sydney Opera House, performed for Chanel, put on sold-out Crypt shows, collaborated with Snoop Dogg, and have shared stages with Jamie xx, The Avalanches, and opened a series of dates for Genesis Owusu in the US last year. Combining live avatars, motion capture, and various mixed media works with an equally diverse cast of collaborators, DeepFaith will be soon on the road for a handful of dates in Europe and Asia.
