Eora / Sydney-based vocalist, DJ, producer and songwriter Djanaba today announces her highly awaited debut album, Did I Stutter?, out June 17 via etcetc music, and shares the latest taste of the album with new single ‘Stutter’ featuring Somber Hills. LISTEN HERE + PRE-SAVE THE LP HERE.
Commanding attention from the very first line, ‘Stutter’ sees Djanaba step into her power as a proud Queer Bundjalung woman, refusing to shrink herself down for others. She shares, “This song from the very beginning has a lot of intention, l wrote this song with one thing in mind – my body and how the way l look does not define how l create as an artist, only how people choose to view me. I am fat, and l fucking love it. l’ve always thought l was beautiful, but when people like that minimise my experience it’s a reminder of insecurities l have no right to carry – they are insecurities other people have, or views that don’t align with my own.”
Renowned for his varied songwriting process, combining spur-of-the-moment freestyling with meticulously crafted hooks, Aotearoa-born, Eora-based artist Somber Hills brings his signature versatility to ‘Stutter’, with additional production from Sadie (Lil Skies). Speaking on the single, Somber Hills shares, “I heard this track and wanted to try something different so I hit up Sadie, he produces everything and helped me do some co-production. While hearing the beat a verse just came to mind so I recorded it on my phone in the car and it just fit real nice! I usually make more emo stuff so it was fun to pivot for this one.”
As unstoppable and unapologetic as Djanaba herself, ‘Stutter’ readily sets the tone for her highly awaited debut album, Did I Stutter?, arriving on June 17. Finding equilibrium between free-flowing confidence and authentic vulnerability, this project marks a significant turning point both artistically and personally for Djanaba, with her resolve now stronger than ever: “‘Did I Stutter?’ stands far above what I ever thought I could create. I’ve questioned myself. I’ve stopped myself. I’ve changed myself — but I will never stop growing.”
She continues, “This album could honestly be my own personal how-to guide on figuring shit out in your early twenties. Don’t stop. Don’t question. Don’t change — just grow. While I’ve been figuring it all out, it hasn’t been easy, and it definitely hasn’t been cheap (shoutout to my therapist) — but it has been worth every second. I’m still figuring it out, but FUCK, do I feel lighter.”
With over a million streams to her name, Djanaba continues to break barriers and turn heads with shimmering production and fearless expression. With a vibrant catalogue of singles including the breakout collaboration with PNAU ‘Big Titties’, ‘Broke Back Bitch’, ‘Times Like SIS’, ‘Don’t Really Care’, ‘F.U.’ and ‘Way We Move’, Djanaba is fast securing her position as an electronic pop powerhouse, infusing elements drawn from cross-genre influences to create transcendent dancefloor anthems.
