Having wrapped a national tour run with Laneway Festival and ahead of her appearance at Ability Festthis weekend, Bundjalung pop songwriter, DJ and vocalist Djanaba today shares her brand new project Did We Stutter?, the companion to her debut album Did I Stutter?. Featuring her new single ‘Dig Us Out’ with Jamaica Moana and Anieszka, Did We Stutter? is out now via etcetc music. LISTEN HERE.
As a proud Queer Bundjalung woman, Djanaba’s early 20s have been shaped by growth and resilience, and the release of Did I Stutter? harmonised the experiences that have brought her to her position as a boundary-breaking pop artist on her own terms. With each track as infectious as the last, including standouts ‘Doin To Me’ and ‘Times Like SIS’, the album took a moment to reflect on how far she’s come, the power of harnessing your inner confidence and finding a sense of liberation.
Expanding on the narrative Djanaba introduced via Did I Stutter?, today’s release Did We Stutter? lands as another body of work that showcases her range in artistry. Speaking to the value in connection and collaboration, Did We Stutter materialises a new echelon of her debut that has surpassed even her own expectations. On the release Djanaba reveals, “This album started as something deeply personal just for me, a space to process, create, and move through my own journey in a way that felt honest and therapeutic. I never imagined it would grow beyond that. Getting to invite such incredible artists into this world, to connect, collaborate, and create alongside them, has been one of the most humbling experiences of my life. I’m still genuinely in awe that so many creatives chose to give their time, energy, and vulnerability to this project.”
She continues, “When I first imagined releasing an album, it didn’t even feel fully possible, let alone the idea of reworking it and bringing it to life again through the perspectives of artists I deeply love and admire. That part still feels surreal. Every person who contributed brought their own vision, their own story, and their own truth into this, and that’s what makes it so special. I’m endlessly grateful for the trust, the openness, and the care that’s been poured into this project. To everyone who took the time to be part of it, thank you for sharing your creativity and your vulnerability with me. It truly means more than I can put into words.”
Did We Stutter? sees the release of six new tracks, including collaborations with Beks, Ngaiire, Jewel Owusu, DOBBY, Kayps, Akala Newman, Dyan Tai, Somber Hills and today’s focus track ‘Dig Us Out’ with Māori/Samoan force Jamaica Moana and Australian/Mauritian R&B artist Anieszka. A transcendent release rooted in Djanaba’s electronic-pop prowess, ‘Dig Us Out’ is “one felt really personal to me. It comes from recognising how much of what we accept in relationships is shaped by what we grew up around” shares Djanaba. “Having Jamaica Moana and Anieszka on this track brought in such different energies — it made the whole piece feel more layered and real. When certain patterns feel familiar, it’s easy to mistake them for something normal, and this was a way of unpacking that.”
On the collaboration front, on working with Djanaba Jamaica Moana says “‘Dig Us Out’ was so easy and fun to work on together! Shout out to Djanaba who had so much patience for me and waited for me to hand in my verse months late after my annual Aotearoa hiatus. Safe to say we ate that! My lyrics are just about a silly East LA boy who had some moments with me in West Syd lol, next…”. Anieszka furthers, “It was the mood first, the production, the elusiveness of the lyrics, the way the melodies sat. I just followed that feeling when I wrote my verse and it flowed. Such a cool song to be a part of!”
With over a million streams to her name, Djanaba continues to break barriers and turn heads with her knockout catalogue of singles – including the breakout collaboration with PNAU ‘Big Titties’, ‘Stutter? Ft. Somber Hills’, ‘Broke Back Bitch’, ‘Times Like SIS’, ‘Don’t Really Care’, ‘F.U.’ and ‘Way We Move’. Known for her electrifying live energy, she’s also lit up some of Australia’s biggest stages, including Listen Out, Beyond The Valley, Lost Paradise, Wildlands, Spilt Milk, Summer Camp, MELT Festival (supporting Kah-Lo) and Sydney Festival, chronicling her experiences in a fully-charged, yet realised way.
