Naarm / Melbourne post-punk/indie hybrid dogworld today announce the release of their debut EP RANGE due August 2. With the news comes their latest single and video for ‘777’. LISTEN + WATCH HERE + PRE-SAVE RANGE EP HERE.

Helmed with vocals by bassist Jesse Dowley, ‘777’ builds on the energy of dogworld’s earlier release ‘FISHSACK’ and introduces softer, acoustic textures while retaining the chiming guitar melodies and lush instrumentation that has become the trademark of the band’s sound. Rap-like spoken word verses explore themes of luck and desolation, contrasting light and dark in a style that echoes Australian underground heavyweights Shady Nasty and Low Life. The song breaks into washed-out chorus melodies sung by drummer Ella Tinney, evoking the dreamy vocals of classic shoegaze. Beaming into a final phase of euphoria, ‘777’ is as sentimental and hopeful as modest and direct.

Of the single, dogworld share “Starting out as a demo made by Jesse, ‘777’ quickly evolved from a chord progression into a full song – merging rap-like spoken word verses with shimmering vocal harmony choruses. The track further incorporates acoustic textures, while exploring electronic sounds of old drum machines. ‘777’ contrasts elements of light and dark, as brooding verses break into lush choral vocals, then a driving bridge section, and finally, a euphoric outro which erupts with energy and sentimentality. The lyrics similarly undergo constant transformation, offering striking imagery, evocative musings on luck, and a joking nod to Daft Punk. As the final rings of guitar fade away, the listener feels as though they have completed a journey, ringing with complex emotions and a sense of finality.”

‘777’ arrives in the wake of ‘FISHSACK’, the earlier preview of just how dogworld vow to demonstrate their newfound androgynous zone of sound. ‘FISHSACK’ broke through to acclaim across KEXP, BBC 6’s Nabihah Iqbal, RAGE (Wild One), Life Without Andy, Pilerats and playlisting across triple j Unearthed, FBi Radio and more. Balancing the instinct and inimitable energy of their live presence, dogworld deliver a conscious effort to canvas limitless creation with their desire to offer an alternative prism in so-called Australia’s bustling alternative underground at the hands of Yasmine Hosseini (rhythm guitar, she/her), Ella Tinney (drums, she/her), Jesse Dowley (bass, he/they), and Max Sturm (lead guitar, sampler, he/him).

Speaking to their upcoming EP, they continue, “We’ve been working hard behind the scenes for a while, developing our sound and honing our collaborative capacity as a band. We are so excited to bring these songs into the world as we feel they embody, truly, the sum of our parts and the creative potential we are starting to build as musicians. This EP is something we will all cherish as the marker of our deep bond and our varied range of interests, coming together into one body of work that represents us completely.”

Balancing the instinct and inimitable energy of their live presence, on RANGE, dogworld deliver a conscious effort to canvas limitless creation with their desire to offer an alternative prism in so-called-Australia’s bustling alternative underground. Inspired by the free-flowing serendipity that emerged from rehearsal sessions, reared into dogworld’s all-new style, their debut EP strikes a counterbalance of post-punk flecked with freewheeling jazz and inflections as far wide as alt-country and indie. Writing and performing as a wholly collaborative group with shared vocal duties across all members, since forming in 2021 dogworld have steadily cultivated their apex of sound.

The group’s past string of releases ‘Left’ and ‘Clown’ – supported across triple j Unearthed, FBi Radio, Rage, 3RRR, PBS – took the band to stages shared with Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, Alex Lahey, Shady Nasty, dust and tonight DZ Deathrays amongst headline shows at Northcote Social Club, Sideway and the Vic on the Park. Now the group emerge, inspired by the free-flowing serendipity that flowed through rehearsal sessions, reared into an all-new style. With a counterbalance of post-punk flecked with freewheeling jazz through to alt-country, RANGE is packed with no skips, nor two songs the same, vocals traded effortlessly as chords swiftly recalibrate. It’s the dawn of a new dog world as the group expands their creative wingspan.
