dogworld unleash their expansive debut EP RANGE
Naarm / Melbourne outfit dogworld today unleash their debut EP RANGE, celebrating with a live launch taking place at Yah Yah’s in Fitzroy this evening. LISTEN HERE + BUY TIX HERE.
Striking a cohesive balance between their post-punk influences, their inclination towards the free-wheeling experimentation of jazz, and the sonic textures of alt-country, RANGE embodies the open and expansive scope of its title. Written in the first half of 2023, the EP materialised over a 4-day writing retreat on Yuin Country, among the gums and greater gliders. Over these four days, collaborative writing was the objective – with the goal of creating songs that carried the band’s collective vision and creative flair.
Come time to record, dogworld – comprised of Yasmine Hosseini (rhythm guitar, she/her), Ella Tinney (drums, she/her), Jesse Dowley (bass, he/they), and Max Sturm (lead guitar, sampler, he/him) – operated as an entirely synergistic unit, with vocals traded effortlessly as chords swiftly recalibrate across their serendipitous, free-flowing sessions. The band enlisted Canberra-based engineer Jonathan Corcoran for a collaborative mixing process in the studio, before being sent to AIR Studios in London for mastering, engineered by Barry Grint (Paul McCartney, King Krule, Oasis, Dua Lipa).
Speaking on the EP, dogworld share, “We are so excited to bring these songs into the world as we feel they embody, truly, the sum of our parts and the creative potential we are starting to build as musicians. This EP is something we will all cherish as the marker of our deep bond and our varied range of interests, coming together into one body of work that represents us completely.”
The trilogy of singles released from the EP thus far, ‘FISHSACK’, ‘777’ and ‘DASHCAM’, each marked a distinct claim to the limitless creativity the band envisioned for the project and received widespread praise from fans and media alike – from playlisting across KEXP, triple j Unearthed, RAGE (Wild One), FBi Radio and support from BBC 6’s Nabihah Iqbal, Apple Music’s Matt Wilkinson, Life Without Andy, 10 Magazine, Pilerats, RTR FM, Edge Radio, 3RRR and more.
RANGE is packed with no skips, nor two songs the same, vocals traded effortlessly as chords swiftly recalibrate across the 7 track EP. ‘Loom’, the very first song written for the EP, laid the stylistic grounds for the tracks that came after, with its angular, indie-rock guitar intervals and rhythmic variation providing the foundation for Yasmine’s lyrical world-building. This immersive atmosphere of unease is carried through to ‘The Wax’, with the band’s dynamic and focused instrumental and vocal interplay underlining the themes of uncertainty in the lyrics, taking notes from the likes of Talking Heads, Big Thief, and Black Country New Road. ‘Country’ is an integrated amalgamation of dogworld’s diverse sonic influences, featuring carefully layered instrumentation from banjo plucks and warbling organs, before diving into a doo-wop-esque vocal harmony between all four members for a tongue in cheek ending to a meticulously crafted track.
Since forming in 2021 dogworld have steadily cultivated their apex of sound, effortlessly balancing the instinct and inimitable energy of their live presence with ceaseless creativity. Cutting their teeth with prior singles in ‘Left’ and ‘Clown’ – supported across triple j Unearthed, FBi Radio, Rage, 3RRR, PBS – dogworld have shared stages with Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, Alex Lahey, Shady Nasty, dust and DZ Deathrays amongst headline shows at Northcote Social Club, Sideway and the Vic on the Park.
