Defiant auteur Ecca Vandal has become one of the most ARIA Award-nominated artists of this year, claiming seven categories for her album LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO UNFOLLOW across:
Album of the Year
Best Solo Artist
Best Video (CRUISING TO SELF SOOTHE)
Best Independent Release presented by PPCA
Best Alternative Release
Best Cover Art (Ecca Vandal, Kathryn Vinella, Sean McDonald)
Michael Gudinski Breakthrough Artist presented by Spotify
For Ecca Vandal, the moment is as humbling as it feels kismet. “This album was our own little secret for so long. We recorded it in Richie’s childhood bedroom, just us, with no idea where it would lead. To see it recognised like this, from the music, to the visuals, to the whole world we imagined around it, is so special and surreal. Huge love to everyone who helped us make this thing what it is. We love you! And thank you ARIA!”
The product of deliberate disconnection, LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO UNFOLLOW culminated after years of steady build: a long run of festival stages and high-profile support slots with Deftones and her Coachella debut all before its release this year. The ARIA #1 Vinyl and #2 Aus Album charting release scored critical acclaim for its reflection of the time, place and love it came from.
Recorded and produced by Richie Buxton and Ecca Vandal in Buxton’s childhood bedroom, the anti-establishment, soundclash record of pure, punk heart, has seen Ecca embraced as a significant cultural figure globally. Covers across NME, Glamcult, Alt Press; critical acclaim from Pitchfork, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, CLASH, DIY to tastemaker support from NTS, Diet Paratha, DAZED, triple j and many more. Ecca was featured in both Spotify’s Artist To Watch and Apple’s One To Watch (curated by Zane Lowe) lists of the year, accumulating over 57 million career streams across all platforms.
Ecca Vandal has cemented herself as a performance beast with a consistent run of global festival summer touring including Lollapalooza, Outbreak, Rock Am Ring, Rock Im Park, Pinkpop, Osheaga. Plus a sold out global headline run across the UK, Europe, US, Japan and a triumphant Australian homecoming this November. Her resume already boasts appearances at Camp Flog Gnaw to touring with global heavyweights as Queens of the Stone Age, IDLES, The Prodigy and more.
Ecca’s tribute to INXS at the APRA Awards earlier this year, a brazen cover of ‘Just Keep Walking’, converted its members to new fans, amongst live sessions with Apple Music and guerrilla pop up events in Los Angeles, London and Sydney to packed rooms. Recently, Vandal and her band were amongst the last artists to record a live performance at Abbey Road’s historic Maida Vale Studios for BBC’s Radio 1, and was the only artist to perform at both weekends of All Points East, programmed by Tyler, the Creator and Deftones respectively.
Her breakout hit ‘CRUISING TO SELF SOOTHE’ – clocking over three million views and counting – received its late night debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and soundtracked Apple Music’s latest Spatial Audio campaign, plus further syncs with Netflix and Madden. Sartorially, Ecca’s partnerships with Chopova Lowena and VANS continues with custom dressing and brand ambassadorship. From merchandise to physical sales, Ecca Vandal paraphernalia is a consistent sell out with her steadfast fanbase.
Their allegiance is rife, valiantly behind her every step. Whether that’s triumphantly joining her onstage or singing acapella when the PA cuts out, to emphatically answering her call for drum cover artists to appear in her ‘VERTICAL WORLDS’ music video. The exponential boom of her following is a reflection of the motive at the heart of LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO UNFOLLOW – true, tangible connection for those who choose to go against the grain. One blink across socials and the thousands keep climbing, with comment sections ablaze with endorsement from SZA, Travis Barker, Shirley Manson, Hayley Williams, Flea, Tony Hawke, Lilly Allen – the list goes on.
Today’s nominations are firm proof of the reward that comes from returning to your roots and the pay off when you can’t see yourself being represented in music or culture, to become your own reference. The stage is set for a watershed awards ceremony for Ecca Vandal.
