ella jane shares timeless pop single “Party Trick”
ella jane, who you may know from her viral TikTok videos, is today releasing her single “Party Trick” via The FADER label, Listen/Watch to “Party Trick” HERE.
With this song, ella jane has taken full responsibility for writing with uninhibited honesty, in a way that is reminiscent of the matter of fact lyricism of Phoebe Bridgers or King Princess. This is the first song she wrote overtly about a girl, choosing to fully dive into her truest version of self – scary at first but ultimately freeing. After amassing nearly 200k followers on TikTok during her senior year of high school, she realized that she had been writing these slightly sheathed versions of songs about her own story.
In the video, ella jane resides in the bathroom of a house party, acting as the backdrop for young love and debauchery as friends kiss, gossip, and drink from blue cups in red light. Among it all ella jane keeps her cool, highly aware but keeping an emotional distance as she sings, “I always end up doing shit like this, saying ‘I love you’ for a party trick…”
Of the track, ella jane says, “’Party Trick’ represents a lot of new and exciting beginnings for me – for one, it’s the first song I’ve ever released that is conspicuously, unmistakably about a girl. Though I’ve been open about my bisexuality for a while now, for a long time I was afraid to write about girls in any obvious way. I think this is because I wasn’t ready to be fully honest with myself. But piecing together ‘Party Trick’ reminded me just why I write songs: to access my truest, most vulnerable self, unadulterated by the expectations of others.”
She continues, “Secondly, this song marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life, and I think that really shines through in the music itself. I have found an incredible collaborator in my producer Mike Irish, who knows exactly how to marry the alternative and pop qualities of my writing in a really unique way.”
ella jane‘s sound is a harmonious amalgamation of folk, soul and indie-pop. Her voice is so bright and controlled it’s addictive, put-on-repeat-able similar to the way you’ve got to listen to Olivia Rodrigo, Wallice, Maude Latour over and over again almost unexplainably. Her 2021 single “nothing else i could do” has amassed over 21 million streams on Spotify alone, and she has received praise from Paper, Ones To Watch, American Songwriter, Lyrical Lemonade, and more. Her vision spans beyond the music and into the full creative realm, working with NY Times photographer Sabrina Santiago, photographer Maddy Rotman (recently shot Maggie Rogers &more), videographer Aerin Moreno (Girlpool, madison beer).
