Maine EP by hey, nothing is out now, buy/stream it here.
The viral emo-folk duo hey, nothing is made up of Athens-via-Atlanta best friends Tyler Mabry and Harlow Phillips — two 19 year olds who are wise beyond their years when sharing from-the-soul stories of addiction, toxicity, trauma, and familial struggles. Through harmonies that weave tension with resolve, hey, nothing’s roughly hewn and lyrically deft emo-folk is immediately charming. Today, the duo share their anticipated new EP Maine, with its focus track “Piece of You.” Buy/stream Maine here.
Written in a small cabin in the middle of Maine, the EP sees Mabry and Phillips recounting recent experiences as honestly and emotionally as humanly possible — the culmination of processing the heavier things in their young lives. While facing concepts of addiction, fading love, and leaving home for the first time, hey, nothing was also having all their dreams come true: touring, making music, and traveling the country.
Speaking on the EP’s influences, the duo said: “It’s riddled with the guilt of distancing yourself from a problem you know you have zero control over. These songs are the articulation of the emotions that we’d bottled up at the time and weren’t able to verbalize until we were faced with the reflective and soul freeing atmosphere that is the state of Maine.”
Watch hey, nothing perform “Piece of You” live in Maine (premiering at 1 PM EST today) here.
“Piece of You” fits perfectly as Maine’s focus track, with the duo stripped down to an acoustic guitar and gut-wrenching vocals. The most recent taste of the EP came with “Timeline,” which followed the light that previous singles “The Sink” and “Maine” had shone. In simply teasing “The Sink” in a short video, it drove over three million views across TikTok, grew their Instagram following by the thousands, and has doubled their Spotify streams week-over-week.
hey, nothing’s lyrics come directly from their own hardships of growing up (possibly too early, too fast). They fittingly found their name from the landmark coming of age narrative The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, where a character requested to be called by their name or “nothing at all.” Though hey, nothing’s rise has been swift, the duo’s punk-folk sound stands its ground, ringing to a tune akin with MJ Lenderman, Violent Femmes, Modern Baseball, or The Front Bottoms.
Mabry and Phillips are also headed back on (an already sold out) tour next month while headlining around the country, with a tour supporting The Moss lined up for October of this year. See all the dates and more info below.
