Emo-Folk Risers hey, nothing Share New Single “Timeline”
The viral emo-folk duo hey, nothing is made up of Athens-via-Atlanta best friends Tyler Mabry and Harlow Phillips — two 19 year olds who are wise beyond their years when sharing from-the-soul stories of addiction, toxicity, trauma, and familial struggles. Through harmonies that weave tension with resolve, hey, nothing’s roughly hewn and lyrically deft emo-folk is immediately charming. Today, the duo share their latest single, “Timeline.” Listen to “Timeline” here.
On “Timeline,” hey, nothing decipher the phenomenon of “the really pretty girl you see at the airport and then never again” — it’s a collective feeling, a near psychotic fixation that leaves as quickly as it comes. Expertly echoing the sounds of Violent Femmes, “Timeline” revolves around acoustic guitar riffs and crisp bass licks that drive alongside mumbled vocals. As the percussion slowly starts taking up more space, Mabry and Phillips get louder, clearer, and (almost) angrier. But the rush fades come the close; the girl walks on and so too does that flash of lust, leaving everything exactly the way it was before.
Of the track, the duo said: “‘Timeline’ is for those who inevitably fall in love with people they see at the airport. It chronicles a character as they harp over the fact that they won’t get to meet someone they’ve only seen once. It’s told from an almost psychotic perspective and draws out a fantasy that, while a little creepy when exaggerated, is extremely universal.”

“Timeline” follows the light that previous singles “The Sink” and “Maine” shone — while simply teasing “The Sink” in a short video last month, it drove over three million views across TikTok, grew their Instagram following by the thousands, and has doubled their Spotify streams week-over-week. Listen to “The Sink” and “Maine” here.
Known for their relentlessly raw and honest sound, hey, nothing turns real life experiences into genuine lyrics, calling back to nostalgia and the hardships of growing up. They fittingly found their name from the landmark coming of age narrative The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, where a character requested to be called by their name or “nothing at all.”
Though hey, nothing’s rise has been swift, the duo’s punk-folk sound stands its ground, ringing to a tune akin with Modern Baseball or The Front Bottoms. hey, nothing also recently wrapped up a tour supporting BoyWithUke in April, having sold out their headline shows in NYC and Philadelphia just the other week.
