Following the recent announcement of her forthcoming album Burnt Tapes out July 5, Eves Karydas continues to reveal deeper layers of her craft with nonchalant new single ‘Take 2’. LISTEN TO ‘TAKE 2’ HERE + PRE-ORDER LP + BUY TOUR TIX HERE.
Penned during the same sessions as the recent ‘Sunday Drive’ in Sweden, today’s ‘Take 2’ sets the tone for Eves Karydas’ new album’s ethos. Firmly written, recorded and produced under the guise of marrying live instrumentation with the essence of serendipity – far away from the digitally compressed standards of the mainstream. ‘Take 2’ traipses through making light of life’s more dramatic moments to consider the bigger picture with nods to the R&B stylings of WILLOW and Kali Uchis.
“As with most of my songs,” Eves explains, “I find it hard to write about anything serious without a bit of self deprecation and light hearted detachment. Perhaps it’s my way of processing any negativity in my life. Take 2 is no exception. I wrote it after recognising the objective ridiculousness in having an argument in the condiments aisle at the supermarket. For my own sanity I have to laugh at my own drama.”
In keeping with her earlier releases that welcomes stripped back, simplicity and wholly reflective of the revered voices that inspire the latest etching of her sound – RAYE, Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa – who similarly skew towards older, soulful music recalibrated into new contemporary stylings. Eves continues, “It’s not an album “made on a computer”. I wanted to capture imperfection and the feeling of a bunch of people in a room playing music together. I hope it at least stands out as something different in this era of overly compressed social media soundbites.”
Reconstructing indignant burnout and frustration in the face of her perceived success, Burnt Tapes is a milestone release for Karydas, set to convey her rise as a hollistic, multi-disciplinary creative. The record for Eves is “an ode to reclaiming my sound, image and narrative,” throwing external commercial pressures firmly behind her. Already emerging with a renewed sense of autonomy and purpose with ‘Sunday Drive’ and ‘Girlboss’, both releases sought praise for the songwriter-vocalists’ “airy soprano” gliding over “an infectious breathy hook” (Rolling Stone) and Karydas as an artist, presenting her “most authentic” image (triple j).
A stoic departure from the Karydas we currently know, Burnt Tapes boasts a powerful embrace of tactile design and analogue recording processes through her own empowered, creative direction. Prioritising expression, creation and promotion in its purest forms, at the hands of Eves herself – staunchly seizing control of her virtuosity and career – Burnt Tapes paints the process that journey through tribute to Eves Karydas’ unwavering self-belief and resilience.
By no means a victim of circumstance, this new album is set to reveal a master of their instrument, the reward of choice and courageous freedom, and merit in embracing a guerrilla ethos. With musicality and conviction unlike before, Burnt Tapes shares an all new purview to her deepest motivations – songwriting and performance. An aptitude Eves Karydas is already recognised for, be it ARIA-platinum certification to over 60 million career streams (and counting).
