Naarm/Melbourne-based vocalist, producer, songwriter and bassist FELIVAND today announces her upcoming sophomore album, my body’s my true north, coming July 18. With the announcement, she also reveals her new single ‘hey you’. LISTEN HERE.
With a sound blended in alt-pop, alternative R&B and bedroom pop, FELIVAND’s music is melancholic, suave and soothingly introspective. As the lead single from her upcoming album my body’s my true north, ‘hey you’ is a cathartic track that captures the emotional fallout of being misled and left in the dark.
Anchored by a brooding synth bass line and later reimagined around nylon guitars, the song evolved from gritty and swaggy to soft, sparkly, and introspective. The track was co-produced and co-written by Simon Lam (Kllo, Lastlings, Ralph Castelli) in his studio on a rainy day in the meat district. “The day of the recording session felt like a space for me to fully dive into those feelings and confront that cowardice. Leaning into that gave birth to the ‘hey you’ hook – kind of like a ‘hey you, yeah you, I’m talking to you’ statement,” says FELIVAND.
On the process and concept of the album, this was an entirely new, uninhibited and expansive direction for FELIVAND. “The concept of the album is all about trusting feeling over thought. It’s a stepping into and an acceptance of the stories, experiences and memories that shape who I am. When I listen to what my body’s telling me, it feels like an unwavering light at the end of the tunnel, an orienting point – something fixed like a ‘true north’ while everything else around it spins. When I follow thought, I’m in with everything that’s spinning.” FELIVAND worked alongside a boundary-pushing group of collaborators for this upcoming album, including Chris McClenney (Khalid, H.E.R), Austin Brown (Doechii, UMI), Billy Lemos (SZA, Tinashe), Taydex (Jon Batiste, Princess Nokia), Wes Singerman (Kehlani, Joji, Masego), Maxwell Byrne (1tbsp, Golden Vessel), Cameron Evans (Blu DeTiger, St Panther) and Simon Lam (Kllo, Ralph Castelli).
