Beginning his next musical chapter after his standout 2022 album, Fly Anakin releases Skinemaxxx (Side A) via Lex Records. LISTEN HERE.
The first of a two-part project made in collaboration with Mutant Academy producer Foisey, Skinemaxxx is a stylistic departure from his critically-acclaimed debut studio album from last year Frank, exercising a renewed vigor for blistering raps paired with a challenging breadth of production from his longtime collaborator Foisey.
Skinemaxxx’s opening side introduces fans to the immersive theme of the project as a whole, operating like a TV guide that scans songs ranging from biographical stories of life growing up in Richmond, quick-witted jabs at past detractors, and an assortment of inside jokes and tongue-in-cheek skits that’s become an essential part of Mutant Academy projects. The first installment of Skinemaxxx includes previously-released singles ‘Outsidigan’s Anthem’, which arrived alongside an accompanying visual co-directed by Anakin and Matt Cowen, and ‘Blicky Bop‘, which The FADER deemed a Song You Need upon its release.
Following the project’s release, Anakin is joining YUNGMORPHEUS on a co-headlining US tour kicking off on May 31 in Atlanta. The tour will stretch across 6 dates, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and a night at Public Records in Brooklyn.
Skinemaxxx (Side A) builds upon the breakout year Anakin had in 2022 with the release of his debut studio album Frank, which includes the stand-out tracks ‘Black Be The Source‘, ‘Ghost‘ and ‘Sean Price‘, and led Pitchfork to describe him as “the single best pure rapper in the scene.” Frank planted Anakin’s flag in the contemporary hip-hop scene as not only a technically-gifted rapper, but as a fully-realized artist and songwriter, and received praise from Rolling Stone, The FADER, Complex, and NPR. The album also landed on best-of-the-year lists at Bandcamp, HipHopDX, OkayPlayer, Uproxx, and more. Most recently, Fly Anakin enlisted Madlib for a remix of the Frank track ‘No Dough‘, which was included in Lex Records’ LEX-XX 20th Anniversary remix series.
