Sydney-based artist Gena Stone has announced her debut EP Screaming Loving, set for release on November 14 via Community Music. Alongside the announcement, she shares new single ‘Grown’, a tender reflection on self-compassion and emotional evolution. LISTEN TO ‘GROWN’ HERE + PRE-SAVE SCREAMING, LOVING EP HERE.
Written and rewritten over several formative years, ‘Grown’ plays like a letter to her younger self, tracing the kind of emotional maturation that doesn’t happen all at once but arrives in fragments: through disappointment, clarity, and eventually, grace. Built on soft keys and ambient textures, the track gives space to Stone’s voice – understated, tremulous, and honest – as it moves between memory and hindsight.
It’s not a song with a dramatic arc, and that’s exactly the point. Instead of catharsis, ‘Grown’ offers something rarer: forgiveness, and the quiet relief that comes from knowing you no longer need to be at war with your past. It recalls the emotional precision of Adrianne Lenker, reframed through a restrained, synth-led palette that is intimate, inward-facing, and unafraid of stillness.
“‘Grown’ is a message to my younger self,” Stone shares. “I wrote the first version when I was around 21, and it’s taken years of rewrites and growing pains before it felt fully finished. The chaos of being in your 20s can feel so overwhelming when there are all these voices trying to shape your view of yourself and the world around you. This song is a reminder to that younger me to carry kindness, let go of the fear of seeming foolish, and trust that things will probably work out as they’re meant to.”
Where previous singles ‘Silhouette’ and ‘Blame Saturn’ dealt with doubt, disconnection, and hard-won accountability, ‘Grown’ feels quieter and more forgiving. It doesn’t try to resolve anything – instead, it allows things to remain open, gentle, and unfinished in a way that feels deeply human.
Stone’s upcoming debut EP Screaming Loving, written during and after her studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, captures that same spirit of vulnerability, curiosity, and inner conflict. “Like many people, I questioned whether I should pursue music — all the ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ that come with chasing a creative path,” she explains. “But nothing brings me as much excitement and happiness as making music, and having the chance to share a full body of work feels like a huge milestone.”
“I wrote and produced the first versions of most of these songs alone, and I’ve had the joy of collaborating with friends to bring them to life. Across five tracks, we explore a lot — lyrically, musically, and genre-wise — but to me, they all feel like they belong together. I’m thrilled to finally share them.”
