Naarm/Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Geography today announces her debut EP, Cyclone, due out March 27 via COHORT/Sungull Records (Juice Webster, RINSE, Mimi Gilbert) in Australia, and Solitaire Recordings (Kate Davis, Armlock, Evan Wright) in North America. Alongside the announcement comes the EP’s title track, out now. LISTEN + WATCH ‘CYCLONE’.

Expanding on the traditional discipline that underpins her stage name, the musical project of Georgia Smith conjures a deep connection to place. Carried by tactile soundscapes of dusty guitars and fluid melodies, Geography’s art manifests as a thread between two disparate worlds – an affectionate, rural upbringing in regional NSW’s Guyra and the landscapes that guide her, against the community and self-discovery Melbourne’s urban scene provides outsiders.

A time capsule of finding strength in her most vulnerable moments – navigating new love, isolation, friendships and existential unknown – Geography’s approach to her debut EP focused on “stripping things back to what’s important”. Committed to trusting her instincts, the 6-song collection attests to the unassuming significance of spur-of-the-moment songwriting, uniquely able to capture the purest form of each song. Geography shares, “There’s an urgency and frivolousness to how I made this record. Some of the scratch lyrics that I had every intention of changing still remain, I couldn’t change them without losing the immediacy. I feel pretty existential at the best of times so I think that helped me create the music.”

EP title track ‘Cyclone’, out today, is a striking portrayal of infatuation analogous to its title, riding the wave of euphoria as the uncertainty and hesitation surges past. Geography shares, “Cyclone is about the whirlwind of new love. It was one of those rare songs I wrote in one go after the confronting realization of my feelings for someone.” The accompanying music video, directed by Joey Clough, sways between contrasting vignettes: delicate snippets of affection between lovers, juxtaposed by the sharp clarity of Geography drifting alone under fluorescent lights.

Leaping into the light with recent single ‘What You Want’, Geography meticulously melds youthful innocence with forthright desire, with subtle hints of nostalgia that reflect her foundational influences. First finding her feet under the presence of lockdowns, music came to conjure hope for Smith, carefully turning towards the records played at home – Dido, Natalie Imbruglia and The Corrs. Strengthening her skills with time taken to fortify her own self sufficiency, the project boasts writing and production at Georgia’s own hands. Her purpose is clear, “I’m not trying to portray an idea of perfection but I’m really looking for truth and feeling and a space to grow and explore.”
