Delicately infusing hypnotic dub with seductive hip-hop swings and jazzy neo-soul excursions, South London-born Greentea Peng is an artist whose work is guided by self-inquiry, shaped by the dualities she inhabits: pain and pleasure, engagement and withdrawal, expression and stillness.
After rediscovering her love for music while travelling – where she joined a local band in Mexico – a renewed sense of self-confidence propelled her return to London and the release of her 2018 EP, Sensi. The project marked the beginning of a distinctive sound carved from heavy, weighty narration, dubby grain, hissy textures and sparse arrangements. The six-track release is anchored by negative space that sits tightly side-chained to the kick, creating a breathing, pumping feel, while minimal melodic movements allow tension to build and swell around her earthy, soulful voice.
This early foundation continued to evolve, punctuated by notable moments such as her performance of ‘Downers’ on COLORS, which garnered millions of views, as well as her television debut on Later… with Jools Holland on the BBC, where she performed her breakout track ‘Hu Man’. These milestones paved the way for her 2021 debut album, MAN MADE, which she described as a record designed to resonate”more in your heart space, and less in your headspace”.
Her latest offering, TELL DEM IT’S SUNNY, dives deeper into her enduring practice of self-witnessing – a work of affirmation, emotional maturity and radical self-acceptance. From ‘BALI SKIT PT. 1’, a soundscape that rises and falls like the ribcage of a shadowy spirit, to ‘RAW’, where we’re once again met with Peng’s poignant voice notes, the album showcases an artist continuing to explore her inner world with clarity and conviction.
Now, the psychedelic R&B soulstress returns to Australia and New Zealand this November, bringing her rich catalogue of deeply personal, genre-defying music to audiences once again. See all Australian/NZ tour routing and on sale details BELOW.
