Headaches, the project of Gadigal/Sydney based vocalist, songwriter and producer Melisa Bester, today reveals their new EP We’ll Make Our Beds When We Get Home out via dottidot. LISTEN HERE + WATCH HERE.

Moving between enthralling shoegaze and sparse synth-pop, We’ll Make Our Beds When We Get Homeis driven by sincere lyricism and swelling, emotionally-charged production. Having cultivated a following across NTS Radio, BBC 6Music and more, the EP harnesses their voice as a means of articulating feelings that often go unspoken, with a maturity beyond their years. Drawing parallels with contemporaries such as Oklou and Chanel Beads, the project places their autonomy as both a writer and producer firmly at its core, commanding attention with each note.

“These songs for me really capture feeling young and stuck in the city” Headaches shares. Seeking forms of connection in ways led by impulse, they continue “This EP is very feeling-led. I tried not to overthink any of the elements of this release. Avoidant, detached, horny, cagey, performative, self destructive. Feeling misunderstood because you’re avoiding understanding yourself. Ending up back in the same places all the time.”

With ‘So Bad’ and ‘Sweeter Than This’, Headaches displayed their ability to craft honest depictions of growing up, exploring feelings of lust, loneliness and the drive for something new. Expanding their sonic world, the project is threaded with resonant stories of navigating saturn return, feeling unsure about the future and learning to find comfort in the present. Contributing to this sense of healing and growth are new tracks including ‘I’ll Grow’, which explores the realisation that growth often comes through pain, whether experienced or caused; ‘Don’t Cry For Me Now’, chronicling a concern that feels performative or insincere; ‘Pulling Me In’, which captures a feeling of uncertainty; and the afflicted ‘Sinking Feeling’.

Headaches furthers, “This project was predominantly made in my bedroom, and so the universe of this project in a way feels confined and internal. The project feels quite nocturnal to me – late night bus rides, waking up at 3am, walking home from a mediocre date.” Caught in the cycle of feeling misunderstood while avoiding understanding yourself, We’ll Make Our Beds When We Get Home arrives as a source of clarity and connection for Headaches. Hypnotic and reflective, the EP launches their place as an artist emerging with a DIY ethos and a sonic evolution led by intuition.
