Agung Mango today unveils his debut album, IN BELLY WE TRUST. LISTEN HERE.
As the next official phase of his fascination with sonic experimentation, IN BELLY WE TRUST is Agung Mango threading together a defined sense of originality and versatility with the philosophy of the brain-gut connection – the enteric nervous system. Much like his acclaimed 2022 EP, MAN ON THE GO, IN BELLY WE TRUST sees the project come to terms with the ever-evolving nature of music making, however this time around is led by a breadth of trials and tribulations guided by his Indonesian and Italian backgrounds, with contributions from travels in Bali and inspired audio recordings from friends and family to enhance technical depth.
An album of navigating this realisation, IN BELLY WE TRUST is a testament to patience and maturity, and how it’s reached by taking detailed notes from his environment, the people that surround him and his own dependency. Already praised across triple j, triple j Unearthed, NME, Rolling Stone AU/NZ, Complex, FBi Radio, ABC RAGE and more, Agung Mango’s singles ‘THE MOTH PREFERS THE MOON’, ‘PEMECUTAN NAPOLETANA’, ‘GUT’ and ‘FLUENT‘ have proved his dynamism, a step forward with a rap-rock carving in a realised world debuted across twelve tracks.
From exploring philosophical Balinese creative energies in ‘PRAY4TAKSU’, island life in ‘FLUENT’ and the strength-in-passion teachings of his working class Italian grandfather in a dedicated ‘RAGING BULL’, IN BELLY WE TRUST is at its core, an embrace of honesty and sincerity. Navigating new sonic territories, Agung Mango seeks influence in finding a voice and place in the hip-hop world through ‘BELLYONAIRE’ and ‘APPRENTICESHIP’ realises the pivotal role of a student in this place. ‘PEW PEW’ analyses how ideas can take to another dimension alongside ‘SAVE URSELF’ and ‘DOWN2EARF’ which enhance his craft through imagination, also highlighted in ‘ECHO’ – a more R&B directed cut that speaks to passion, infatuation and lust.
Speaking to IN BELLY WE TRUST’s release, Agung Mango shares, “This album is a reflection of a pivotal moment in my life where I learned to trust myself and embrace authenticity. I was going through a lot during that time and music seemed to be the only release that was helping me. It’s a raw expression of my journey in the last year and a bit.”
Adopting a sense of industrialism grounded with visceral vocal tones, IN BELLY WE TRUST takes sonic cues from Paris Texas – whom he recently supported on their Laneway Festival sideshows – to N.E.R.D. in an overt stream that lays the full spectrum of his cadence and range. In a deeply personal release for Agung Mango, the album circles the outskirts of intuition and faith through his magnetic presence and fearless experimentation as a rising underdog continuing to triumph as a rap sensation.
In celebration of the project, Agung Mango is continuing to deliver his live shows, playing in Bali on August 2 to round off his recent string of dates across Southeast Asia, before heading to Eora/Sydney and Naarm/Melbourne this September. For all dates and ticket information, see HERE.
Since his debut in 2017, Naarm / Melbourne based artist Agung Mango has feverishly worked to establish himself as one of the trailblazers in Australia’s underground rap scene. From releasing a string of EPs in MAN ON THE GO – which earned him the Music Victoria Award for Best Hip Hop Work in 2023, Son of Agung and OPENFORBUSINESS, Agung Mango’s mainstream stature has steadily risen in time, landing festival slots, sharing the stage with Tame Impala in Bali earlier this year, plus collaborations including JID, Freddie Gibbs, DJ Pee .Wee (Anderson .Paak), Genesis Owusu, WIKI, Milan Ring, 1300, Lucy Blomkamp and more. Cultivating a following across triple j and Unearthed, Apple Music, NME, Complex, 10 Magazine, VICE, Acclaim, Pilerats, and more consistently praising his nimble ability to push and break boundaries or juggle melodic songs and furious raps effortlessly, Agung Mango continues to take listeners and industry alike beyond their comfort zones.
