Introducing electronic post-punk trio Rain Dogs who today unveil their new EP, Under The Influence, out now via Naarm/Melbourne-based label Jpeg Artefacts (Other Joe, Darcy Baylis). LISTEN HERE.
The project of vocalist Tom Murchie, bassist Luke Scott (HighSchool) and guitarist Ju Shung, RainDogs is a clear-eyed exploration into gothic, discordant and vampiric production. Since the release of their 2021 self-titled debut EP, they’ve been building momentum and dialling into their sound, balancing influences from post-punk, synth and electronica to steadily introduce their next creative instalment.
Showcasing the band’s distinct spectrum of sound, today’s release Under The Influence captures Rain Dogs’ strong sense of DIY production that sits in a landscape of its own. Taking cues from the likes of Moin and HTRK to the hypnotism of Bowery Electric, the EP is a project entirely self-produced and self-mixed, electronically boosted by warbling synths and low baritone vocals.
Throughout the five tracks, ‘Nights Are Lonely’, ‘More Than Desire’, ‘High Speed’, ‘Disintegrate’ and ‘Neon Dreams’, Under The Influence carves out a space that is immersive as it is atmospheric, balancing the band’s instinct with their diverse sonic influences. Speaking to the EP, Rain Dogs share, “We worked on this EP in London, Melbourne and China. It’s darker than the first EP, with more stripped back instrumentation, following a theme of nightlife and hedonism.”
Previously making their mark with their 2021 self-titled EP, which included tracks ‘Italy‘ and ‘Catacomb Eyes‘, Rain Dogs have collected support across the board from NTS Radio’s Breakfast Show, fbi radio, PBS FM, 3RRR, Skylab Radio, Beat Magazine among others, and have strengthened their skills on the live front with shows in China, Japan, Paris, Berlin, London, Belgrade and Tbilisi. Through Under The Influence, the trio expand on their artistry with perpetual creativity.
To celebrate the release of Under The Influence, Rain Dogs will be playing shows in Gadigal/Sydney at The Vanguard on Jan 29 (with support from California Girls) and details of an Naarm/Melbourne show to come soon. For all info, see BELOW.
