Today, the ascendant Chinatown alt-pop group quickly becoming an NYC staple, Chanpan, releases their new single “luigi’s mansione,” It’s a gamer’s dream, influenced by a Nintendo Gamecube video game – but it also offers a young observer’s glitchy, real-time perspective of a potential turning point of late stage capitalism. Tonight, they’ll throw a headline single release party at Night Club 101, following a sold out debut LA headline show, details below. Listen to “luigi’s mansione” here.
In “luigi’s mansione,” produced with Aire Atlantica (SZA, Doechii), you can detect moments of ethereal, jazzy influence on the keys, contrasted with the glitchy-trap, Nintendo-core in the dance influence. You can find glimmers of Moby, Stereolab, and N.E.R.D. cozied right up alongside FCUKERS and Syd; oscillating between sophisticated piano flourishes and club-worthy beats. They fit in busking in the streets of Chinatown, playing VOGUE-worthy weddings, just as much as they can sell out LA’s most watched new club.
Aside from the loaded sonic blend, Chanpan have also got a lot to say with “luigi’s mansione,” which was written on the day Luigi Mangione was identified as the alleged UH CEO gunman. It is, in part, an answer to the questions that are posed in previous single “lost & confused” where the band asked, “who’s the guy we’re waiting for?”
Of the track, Chanpan says, “This is a song for everyone who’s sick of their bosses, sick of being taken advantage of, and sick of being sick while someone else gets rich.”
Over the last two years, Chanpan has already earned support from VOGUE, NYTimes, Numéro Tokyo, Brooklyn Magazine, Ones To Watch, The Luna Collective, and more. The trio is made up of Grace Dumdaw and twin brothers Lance and Matthew Tran. Chanpan’s music blends the dance pop of PinkPantheress, jazzy soul of Hiatus Kaiyote, and superstar spunk of NewJeans into a brand new sound.
