Introducing DijahSB: “Kid Cudi f*cks with DijahSB and so should you” (Complex)

January 23 2021

Toronto-based rapper DijahSB makes navigating synth loops, booming bass claps, and smoothed out production look easy. Quick-witted, agile, inspirational without being preachy, their music is a raw look into the mind of a Black non-binary artist rapping their way through hope, heartbreak, and breakthroughs.

Listen to DijahSB‘s new single “Throw That Back”HERE and watch HERE.

Of the new single, Dijah says, “‘Throw That Back’ is my first single of the year and I want it to set the tone. Things are f*cked up right now. Art is so needed right now. Light is needed. I hope this is what this song can bring to the world.”

Dijah has been emerging out of Toronto’s hip hop scene as a standout artist on the precipice of international stardom, earning high praise from Vice, Fader, the CBC, Complex (Canada), Spotify Canada – who just tapped them as a new ‘Radar’ artist, featuring them on aBillboard in Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square last week – and more. Their music is absolutely buzzing, effortlessly gliding across drum-heavy boom bap, grungy guitar rock, and trap’s booming bass with lyrics that are raw, relatable – a small light pushing through dark cracks of an artist in a constant state of observation and growth.

The heaviness and vulnerability of the lyrics buoyed by a light vibe and upbeat beat blend so seductively on “Throw That Back”: “I just want a crib where they think I can’t afford it / neighbours get mad when they see me in the morning…career treadmill just running in place / I don’t know how but I gotta get paid / and she gotta get paid, so I’m in the strip club like ayee! / throw that back.”

Dijah cites Kid Cudi, Pusha T, and Lupe Fiasco as some of their main influences and idols, but their emcee style is so unique and fun, it’s hard to compare. Ever earnest and open about their struggles with depression, mental health, and financial instability, their music serves as a balm; a friend baring battle scars that might serve to soothe your own. Stay tuned for more music and news coming from DijahSB in 2021.
