Jordan Dennis, aka “Melbourne’s answer to Anderson .Paak” today shares new single “Hokus Pokus” via his own label imprint, Jordan Dennis Records (a joint venture between The Orchard and Melbourne tastemaker collective, The Operatives). Jordan Dennis first emerged as the frontman for the soulful, hip-hop inspired collective Billy Davis, whose 2017 album Family Portrait featured the likes of Denzel Curry and saw praise from OkayPlayer, DJ Booth, among others. A master at weaving multiple genres into his craft, Dennis’s solo career took off in 2018 where he has since seamlessly bounced between smooth neo-soul, spitfire rhymes, and glossy precision-cut wordplay invoking the style of JID, Kenny Mason, Mick Jenkins, and building a loyal fanbase along the way. Dennis’s sharp-witted verses have also appeared on tracks produced by UNO Stereo, Dugong Jr, and more.
Produced by JUJO, “Hokus Pokus” sees Dennis’s quick wit and effortless flow on display with his verses ducking and weaving between a low-end booming beat, in precise, quick-fire succession before a singalong-ready chorus. Directed by Jonathan Karalis of 76m Films, who are also behind documentaries/visuals for Tyga, Joey Purp and more, the “Hokus Pokus” video was createdin collaboration with Beats By Dre. Dennis appears from a theatre under bright stage lights, dressed in a top hat and waistcoat as he performs his cheeky stage persona to fanfare through a plethora of gags and costume changes.
Says Jordan Dennis on “Hokus Pokus”: “‘Hokus Pokus encompasses the type of magic I feel in being able to create what I love, around the people I love. I made this song really tryna step back from what I’m doing currently to look at the life I live and say ‘Wow. Isn’t all this amazing when you take a second to appreciate it?’. I wanted this track to lend a perspective of presence, enjoyment and appreciation for the good in our lives that we are able to experience and thus should be celebrated.”
Director Jonathan Karalis on the video: “When we first heard Jordan Dennis’ track ‘Hokus Pokus’ we instantly had a vision. Studying the greatest magicians of the time, such as Houdini, Thurston & Keller, just to name a few, we discovered a world of showmanship. We were then able to create the showboating character ‘Le magnifique Jordan Dennis’, a man of exotic mystery, who parades around the stage with animated flair and arrogance, performing basic tricks with a comedic twist. Filming at The Forum Theatre in Melbourne with access to full stage lighting, gave us an opportunity to really show the grandeur of the era.”
Today’s single and music video marks the next chapter for Jordan Dennis as he also announces his upcoming SALAD EP. Showcasing his impressive musical range, from slick, rapid-fire rhymes to effortless R&B vocals, SALAD perfectly captures Jordan’s prolific talents and leaves no doubt of the emcee’s unmatched skill in conquering a multi-genre soundscape.
