Introducing: Yoni Mayraz w/ “Rooftops”
Today, Yoni Mayraz — the London-based keyboardist, composer, and producer who fuses jazz with elements of 90’s New York hip hop, old-school breakbeats, and Middle Eastern music to create shimmering hybrid forms — shares the new single “Rooftops” via PPK Records. Listen to “Rooftops” here.
“Rooftops” also introduces a fresh addition to Yoni Mayraz’s band, with flutist Ruta Sipola (Caveman, Clairo) joining bassist Tom Driessler (Yussef Dayes, Adele, Jordan Rakei) and drummer Zoe Pascal (Ife Ogunjobi, Sheila Maurice-Grey).
Of the single, Mayraz says: “‘Rooftops’ was born from a vision of crumbling rooftops and dried-out solar panels. Blissful moments inside the turmoil. I aimed to capture that notion through a contrasting trio-driven beat and intimate strings. The band is joined here by violinist Nicole P Barracks.”
Accompanying the track is a monochrome visualizer of a quickly-paced tour through London’s underground after dark — watch here.
Mayraz first burst onto the new jazz scene in 2020 with Rough Cuts, an EP that introduced the world to uniquely fluid style. Since then, he has collaborated with the likes of Ruby Rushton’s Tenderlonious and Dance legend El-B, and toured extensively with his band, performing at Montreux Jazz Festival, The Jazz Cafe London, Brussels Jazz Festival, Ronnie Scott’s London, and more.
In 2023, Mayraz released his critically acclaimed debut album Dybbuk Tse! on Astigmatic Records. It subsequently propelled him to the forefront of the international jazz scene, selling thousands of physical copies worldwide, garnering millions of streams on digital platforms, and earning fans at KEXP, KCRW, BBC 6, Bandcamp, and CLASH.
“Rooftops” begins a new chapter for the highly skilled musician, with more music just on the horizon.
