Two of contemporary rap music’s most undefinable figures, JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown have spent their respective careers confounding expectations and creating some of the most postmodern sounds to ever grace the genre. Their highly anticipated collaborative album SCARING THE HOES lands this Friday and today, the pair releases the album’s title cut; an uncompromising sonic manifesto for the album’s indescribable sound. LISTEN + WATCH HERE + PRE-ORDER LP HERE.

Capping off over a year of fervent anticipation from fans and providing some of the most boundary-pushing work of either artist’s discographies – SACRING THE HOES sparks the catalyst for the underground rap scene to unify and redefine what is possible within the hip-hop space.

One of the project’s most freewheeling tracks, ‘SCARING THE HOES’ takes the meme that inspired the album and reclaims it – acknowledging the connotations of exclusivity within experimental music and wearing them as a badge of honor. Taking a frantic clap pattern and drawn out, jazz-infused brass sound and using them as an unconventional backdrop for JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown’s intense flows, ‘SCARING THE HOES’ assumes the role of those who can’t stomach progressive sounds in rap music, using all the typical arguments to denounce its power with a heavy-duty dose of irony.

The pair’s freeform approach to delivery all ties together in the track’s final section; spotlighting a dominant drum pattern and a bassline that gives evidence of the genius of both artists, purposefully taking the road less travelled to expand the originality of their already wildly diverse outputs.

A fusion of rap, rock, jazz, high-energy electronic music and everything in between, JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown’s SCARING THE HOES plays into the strength of two of the most daring, subversive artists operating today. Through celebrating their complete refusal to compromise, the duo have created one of the most intense and genuinely rewarding listening experiences of the year, and with it, the watershed moment that the underground rap scene has been waiting for. The wait is almost over.
