PRAISE FOR MAPLE GLIDER Feature Album Double J Feature Album PBS FM Album Of The Week 3RRR FM Packet Album FBi Radio “What a voice!” Zan Rowe “The Melbourne-based songwriter’s debut is sparse and hypnotic, drawing connections between her experiences of leaving a relationship and leaving a religious upbringing” Pitchfork (7.4) “Sublime” PAPER “A piece that tries to unravel the intricacies of a religious upbringing and a relationship, both of which kept her from being her true self” Bob Boilen (NPR) “Some voices in indie just hit home” Stereogum “Glider’s airy vocals float beautifully throughout the song, with Iansek’s signature slow-burning and evocative production making for a stunning listen” NME “As Tradition quivers with its intimacy, drawing from the same deeply personal chord of Julia Jacklin and Angie McMahon, albeit with nuances and touches that make it distinct to herself” Pilerats |
Maple Glider today shares a live video of ‘Mama It’s Christmas‘ alongside the announcement of a special 7″ record free with all purchases of her debut LP To Enjoy is the Only Thing while stocks last through your local record store. WATCH HERE.
As part of her prize as winner of the 2021 Needle In The Hay competition from Happy Mag, Maple Glider will be printing a short run of a 7″ single featuring the album closer ‘Mama It’s Christmas‘, with a live version of the song for the B-Side. ‘Mama It’s Christmas‘ was the first song of Zietsch’s to bring her to the Pieater family, as the inaugural Pie School winner in 2017. As captured in her NPR Tiny Desk (home) concert, the release is an unflinching assessment of heartbreak, a stripped-back performance and captivating presence is all it takes for the hairs on the back of your neck to stand up, as she sings “I should have reached through the phone / Slapped you hard on the cheek / So that you could know pain like I do when you leave.”
Zietsch only started releasing singles ‘As Tradition‘, ‘Good Thing‘, ‘Swimming‘ and ‘Baby Tiger‘ in 2020, yet she has connected easily and earnestly with a global fanbase. Partnering with labels Pieater (Australia) and Partisan (ROW), Zietsch now has fans at Pitchfork, NPR Music, Stereogum, NME, The Line Of Best Fit, Paste, KCRW, Gorilla vs Bear, Consequence, triple j, Double J, UPROXX, and more, for her devastating yet piercingly beautiful music, as well as over 3 million streams, a sold-out debut headline tour, opening slots for Julia Jacklin and Angie McMahon and most recently, the winner of the Music Victoria awards for ‘Best Breakthrough Artist‘. Needless to say, 2021 has been a breakthrough for Maple Glider, now soaring in hyperspeed.

ABOUT MAPLE GLIDER Maple Glider is the project of Naarm/Melbourne based singer-songwriter Tori Zietsch (pron. like ‘peach’ with a z), and on her debut LP To Enjoy is the Only Thing she compiles a striking set of vignettes from her life; growing up in a restrictive religious household, falling in and out of love, cross-country and international travel, longing, alienation, and more. It’s an album full of brittle intimacies and effortlessly balanced instrumentation (not a note wasted), brought to vivid life by the beauty of Tori’s artistry and wry sense of dark humour. Produced by ARIA-nominated Tom Iansek (Big Scary, #1 Dads, The Paper Kites, Hockey Dad), the album has found fans across the music journalism world, and Maple Glider recently performed for NPR’s Tiny Desk (at home), and Stephen Colbert at home. Maple Glider shares, “This is what the album looks like to me: walking past tinsel covered trees in mid-September, swimming along the calanques in the south of France, car-bonnet frost, darkness at 4pm, lightness until 10pm, a muted feeling, the perpetual grey fog that swallows the Silver Coast, the colour red, this ugly green dress, red wine, red blood, red lips, red is the colour of the cardinal’s robe, Switzerland, my mother’s diaries, a coroner’s report, the sun on my face, the end of love, “To enjoy is the only thing. BTCH$.” |
