Following the announcement of his forthcoming album POPS out August 16 via Lex Records, Canadian songwriter and artist Matthew Tavares (aka Matty) returns with a new double single release “MADLY” / “AROUND THE WORLD.” Listen to the double singles + preorder POPS here.

Concise but stylish, “MADLY” / “AROUND THE WORLD” sees Matty continue to follow a indie-tipped path, one that pulls on the strings of heartache complexities and life-affirming love, both themes sprinkled throughout his upcoming album’s stripped back tight pop nature. Piling reliable hooks over a trademark chord progression for an effect that could effortlessly resonate on a pop-rock cut from the 60s, both “MADLY” / “AROUND THE WORLD” pushes his sound into a new direction to reveal himself slowly, on a more carefree and eclectic level.

Of the release, Matty says: “‘MADLY’ is another simple song about love. Like with every other song on this record, my only process was to be simple and direct and honest. Having gone to music school I went through a phase in my life where I raised my nose and scoffed at the idea of writing a song with two chords for 90% of it. Two chords, I mean c’mon, how am I supposed to convince you I’m a genius with that??? I think this whole record is a metaphor for my life; I have a tendency to make things way too complex for no reason.”

Today’s double single joins his previous release “FOOL 4 U” from his album POPS (out August 16 via Lex Records), which saw support across press and radio from the likes of Double J, Pilerats, KCRW, BrooklynVegan, Exclaim and more praising Matty’s ability to make music that “comes straight from the heart” (Clash Magazine). Now with POPS, Matty relinquishes his low key and understated style for something larger than life. With a sound that fuses his nostalgia for the golden era of blogs with the diversification of the late 2000s and an isolated suburban upbringing, he maintains a level of honesty and openness that has defined his past work in a dynamic release that constellates around music’s greatest subject: love.

A founding member and keyboardist of acclaimed jazz group BADBADNOTGOOD, Tavares has gone from being an in-demand producer with some of the biggest names in music to a songwriter and artist in his own right, having touched corners of the globe and cemented two GRAMMY Awards and five nominations. Between collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Ghostface Killah, MF DOOM, Tyler the Creator, Kali Uchis, Tavares has also played with Frank Ocean, soundtracked Virgil Alboh’s landmark S/S 2019 runway show for Louis Vuitton, and penned songs for Post Malone, Rosalia, Travis Scott, Kodak Black, Justin Beiber, Camilla Cabello, Jack Harlow amongst others.
