Meet Once Twice, the London-based electronic duo who share their new single ‘Extisis’, the final track of their debut EP Movement, out today. LISTEN TO MOVEMENT HERE.
Since coming together in 2021 Once Twice have spent the last four years quietly making music, releasing only direct to their friends on the internet and eventually widening the net to an early Discord fanbase before releasing their first official single ‘Deep Breath’ in April last year. With a musicality that lies in the ever-changing UK underground scene, the imprint of Once Twice is distilled in the balance between emotion and their surroundings, intertwining elements of club, ambient and synth that aren’t bound by limitations of style.
Now with their debut EP Movement, Once Twice lend a sense of place and character that is driven by their unique creative evolution. A four-track collection of dense electronica, Movement is replete with sincerity while also grounded in the rhythms of club – an archived snapshot into these spaces. Speaking to the EP Once Twice share, “Super excited to have this EP out! We wanted to explore the club experience, inspired by states of euphoria, intense panic, and the shifting states in between. It sounds good loud and hopefully is fun to dance to also.”
Featuring last year’s previously released drops ‘Deep Breath’, ‘Movement’ and ‘Warm’, Once Twice today round out the project with the EP’s final sound design ‘Extisis’. The EP kicks off with the electronically-boosted ‘Deep Breath’, a club track that is a nod to the duo’s ability to mix the tranquil with the upbeat, and “the kind of tune you’d play to find your zen in the middle of the bustling dancefloor”. With next track ‘Movement’, Once Twice offer up a new undercurrent of fast-paced drums and pensive vocals, speaking to the unpredictable nature of life and the chaos that comes with – “Now that you are all here / is it easier to love me”.
The second half of the EP shifts gear with ‘Warm’; a spiritual, gospel-tinged club track that features a 50s doo-wop sample to explore the same euphoria they’re becoming known for with elements of futuristic soul. Brimming with energy in a slight ode to hyper-pop, today’s focus ‘Extisis’ serves as a toast to the duo’s career so far – a chopped and screwed rush of adrenaline that captures the joy of creating and sharing music.
Finding fans on the live front with Maceo Plex, TSHA and Jamie xx, Once Twice have cultivated audiences across radio waves at BBC Radio 6, Foundation FM, Rinse FM and SWU FM alongside local London performances at All Points East, Field Day, FOLD, The Glove That Fits and The Pickle Factory. An electric exploration of synth, ambient, techno and club, Once Twice emerge as a duo sonically akin to the revivalism of Skee Mask’s Compro, mind-massaging nature of Ludwig A.F. and boundless expansion of Call Super – a duo energised by pure feeling years beyond their DIY impulses.
