Singer-songwriter Mikayla Pasterfield today announces her debut EP, titled Heritage Listed due June 13. To celebrate, she shares her brand new single ‘Voodoo’. LISTEN HERE + WATCH HERE.
Speaking to lovelorn desperation and an archetype of being ‘actively kept a secret’, ‘Voodoo’ is a stop-in-your-tracks release that hits play on the yearning button. “It centers around the desperation that you experience when all you really want is to be loved by someone but they cannot (or will not) openly express that they share the same feelings. It essentially says ‘I will be with you in any way as long as we’re together. The central line is ‘If the things that we speak always stay in this room, is there part of me that can stay here with you too’.” Mikayla reveals.
Replete with introspection, ‘Voodoo’ draws a similar commanding nature to previous single ‘Heritage Listed’, which spoke to wanting to step outside of one’s hometown bubble while not wanting to leave forever. Now with ‘Voodoo’, it’s the longing for a sense of closure to a complicated situation through a reflection of intimate moments – dialling in on the patience, understanding and desperation that comes with knowing that someone can’t give you what you need.

As the second track lifted from her forthcoming debut EP Heritage Listed out this June 13, ‘Voodoo’ is another display of Mikayla’s ability to share music from the heart while simultaneously casting a local lens on universal sentiments. Honing her penmanship over the years with second single ‘Bindi In The Dirt’, a haunting vignette of a relationship through love and loss praised as “another striking example of Pasterfield’s songwriting prowess” (SXSW Sydney), Mikayla’s sights are firm on transforming her buzz into securing her place as one of the country’s next best songwriters, captivating audiences across BIGSOUND to shows with Laurel, Nick Mulvey, GRAACE and more.
With just a handful of releases to her name, Mikayla Pasterfield’s story is already the stuff of legend. Raised on the outskirts of Camden, NSW and motivated to share songs from the heart she stumbled into music accidentally – a “high school scheduling mishap” – that could never anticipate the global resonance of her debut single ‘Damage You Still Do’. Over a million streams, triple j playlisting and millions of tiktok views with comments from Gracie Abrams (“YEAHHHHHHH”), Zach Bryan (“no sike. you’re such a great writer”), Chelsea Cutler (“Wow”) and more.
A voice that submerges you in her storytelling, Mikyala will be joining Jem Cassar-Daley for a selection of dates across her ‘Kiss Me Like You’re Leaving’ tour, with special guest performances across Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne this June. Now is the time to get familiar with Mikayla Pasterfield.
