Founded in 2015 by Nina Las Vegas, on the same day she left her post at national broadcaster triple j, NLV Records has championed forward-thinking, diverse, and original club music for a decade. As one of the longest-running female-founded and led record labels in the country, NLV Records has shaped the landscape of electronic music in Australia and beyond.
Not once in their ten year stretch has Nina or her label faltered on their mission in pushing boundaries by proudly spotlighting cutting-edge artists and groundbreaking sounds. Recognised for carving a “niche through careful oversight and intention” (Beatport), NLV Records is consistently at the forefront of experimental club music, from dancehall, grime and lo-fi electronic, in the Australian music scene. This ten year anniversary brings together past, present and future artists for a high-energy, genre-defying evening of community and music.
“I can’t believe it’s been ten years, it feels like only yesterday I left triple j to start this journey,” shares Nina Las Vegas. “It’s been a huge decade of music, artists, collaborators and adventures, and I’m so excited to celebrate. It’s powerful to see how far NLV has come, especially in an industry that doesn’t always make space for women to lead, last, or be loud. But I feel like I’ve done all three.”
Nina Las Vegas and NLV Records impact and legacy extends across decades and borders, with acts as Mall Grab & Effy, Skrillex, Cashmere Cat to Jamz Supernova quick to list her synonymously with the Australian club eco system. In Jyoty’s words, “As DJs we make sure to represent the music and cultures by bringing people into things without just appropriating it. I learnt how to do that from her. She taught me so much about crowd control, how to be in front of a crowd that isn’t really there to hear you play and how to let them in and make them a fan of music that they’ve never heard before… You gotta support your local heroes.”
Celebrating this milestone NLV Records 10th birthday will feature appearances from girl EDM connoisseur Ninajirachi, dancehall vanguard Gold Fang and afro swing vocalist Big Skeez, future bass head FOURA, and a reunion of her inimitable b2b with Anna Lunoe, teaming up for the first time since their groundbreaking Boiler Room set. South Florida rave dynamite Jubilee (NYC) also joins as the first international guest to be announced alongside sets from wider family and alumni: the M.I.A, Diplo, Tkay Maidza credited producer Swick, Korean boyband 1300, indigenous powerhouse DJ dameeeela, hard experimental dance artist Laces, genre explorer Strict Face, master producer Lewis CanCut and more to be announced.
A go-to outlet for original and forward-thinking club music, NLV Records is an embodiment of Nina Las Vegas’ unmatched work ethic and passion. An extreme dedication to championing underground talent and filling a pocket for under-represented areas of the genre guides every element of her work. Her’s is a celebrated track record as an early champion of artists that have gone on to change the game – most notably as one the first radio DJs to introduce the nation to SOPHIE and hyperpop as she did to Skepta and grime.
Since leaving her decade-long post at triple j, Nina’s experience beyond the label extends to her rigorous schedule as a DJ and producer: hitting every major festival in Australia to hosting local Boiler Room takeovers, tours across the US, UK, Europe, Japan amongst Coachella, SXSW, to remixes for Charli xcx and stages shared with peers and friends as Porter Robinson, Sofi Tukker amongst countless return mixes on Rinse FM, NTS, The Lot Radio, BBC Radio 1 and many more.
Outside of music, Nina boasting a long standing partnership with the Australian women’s national football team, the CommBank Matildas to co-founding the charity Heaps Decent with Diplo, an organisation empowering young people through skills building, cultural access and creativity to demonstrate how music can change lives. That ethos with a deeply entrenched position in the community is what continues to guide every element of Nina and the label’s work, a singular spirit that makes Nina Las Vegas the influential figure she is today.
