“his sharply-accented voice floats between spoken word, soul, reggae and Afrobeat, bypassing genre lines with a fluidity that makes it impossible to place him into one box”

Office Magazine

“the emerging artist has respectfully blown off all notions of conforming to 'genre'”

PAPER Magazine

“channeling the traditions of Afrobeat bandleaders like Bola Johnson and Fela Kuti”

Pitchfork

“a post-Afro maximalist and hip-hop multi-hyphenate, defying octaves and spiritual realm.”

King Kong Magazine

“There’s something both seismic and serene about Obongjayar. You hear it in his voice, feel it in the rhythm of his music, and, if you're fortunate enough to talk to him, sense it in the depth of his introspection”

Astrophe Magazine

“There is a unique spirit threaded through the music of Obongjayar. One need only listen to the opening few tracks of his 2022 record, Some Nights I Dream of Doors, to get the vibe that this is an artist who knows his vision from the ground up. Importantly, it is a vision that requires him to walk to the beat of his own drum”

Rolling Stone Australia

“The Nigerian-born, London-based artist has taken his Afrobeat roots and morphed them into an entirely new sound”

W Magazine

“A passage of emotions and feelings that embody the sporadic and probing nature he suggests governs his music... Obongjayar is no stranger to existing in a cross-section of culture, exploring the themes of chasing fulfilment and wondering where he may fit in”

Acclaim Magazine

Beginning with rich percussion, the song’s joyous and uplifting tone brings a hopeful edge to Obongjayar’s emotionally open and vulnerable lyrics. ‘Give Me More’ is a beautiful offering, boasting production by Yeti Beats (Doja Cat), that captures the feeling of laying your heart at the feet of a lover.

Earlier this year, Obongjayar released his sophomore album PARADISE NOW to critical acclaim, earning praise from the likes of Pitchfork, The Observer, Rolling Stone UK, King Kong, Crack Magazine and more. He had an exciting summer, gracing the stage across the US for his first ever headline shows and festivals including Newport Folk Festival.

The album followed on from his incredible debut album Some Nights I Dream of Doors, which earned him an Ivor Novello award, representing a brilliant shift in his creative process and expert songwriting. On PARADISE NOW Obongjayar melds the wide-ranging world of influences that inform his artistry as a means to construct his own definition of paradise.

Recorded between London and LA with Kwes Darko (Pa Salieu, John Glacier), Yeti Beats (Doja Cat) and Beach Noise (Kendrick Lamar, Baby Keem, Bakar), PARADISE NOW promises adventure while showcasing OB’s most intimate storytelling yet. He grapples with everything from self-acceptance and transcendence to grief and loneliness, FOMO, procrastination, and never-ending nights, proving why he is one of the most thrilling voices to come out of the UK and African diaspora to date.

From the bubblegum synths on ‘Just My Luck‘, to melodic yet vulnerable affirmations of ‘Born In This Body’, and ‘Talk Olympics’ featuring Little Simz, the last of which Rolling Stone said “excitingly elicits the commotion of a dense West African market, but mirrors the similarly incessant and overwhelming chatter that can spill from the internet into real life,” PARADISE NOW is both emotionally complex and truly singular to Obongjayar.

Early next year Obongjayar will take this dynamic stage presence across Christchurch, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne ahead of Golden Plains and WOMADelaide. At his previous run of shows in 2023, The Music remarked, “When he acknowledged fans flown in from Singapore for this gig, it is evident that his first shows in Australia are a big deal for him.”

Born in Lagos and raised in Calabar, Nigeria, before moving to the UK when he was 18 years old, while growing up, Obongjayar found an escape in music. Growing up in Nigeria, Obongjayar gravitated towards American hip-hop and R&B – Eminem, Ciara, Nelly, Snoop Dogg, and his prized possession, a bootleg Nelly and Usher compilation. It wasn’t until moving to London in his late teens that he really began to appreciate Nigeria’s musical heritage. First releasing his own music through Soundcloud, what quickly followed was a string of hugely successful EPs and singles including ‘God’s Own Children’ which earned him an Ivor Novello award. In 2022 he released his debut album Some Nights I Dream of Doors to critical acclaim with praise from the likes of W Magazine, Vice, i-D, Crack Magazine, The Guardian, NPR, DIY and more. With a truly unique sound blending everything from electronic, soul, pop, afro-beat and more, his compelling music characterised by his thoughtful and emotional lyrics have led him to  collaborate with everyone from Jeshi to Little Simz to Pa Salieu, and most recently Fred again.. on ‘adore u‘, that found the producer sampling Obongjayar’s ‘I Wish It Was Me’ and garnering hundreds of millions streams globally.
