Another Place is out now, buy/stream it here.

Today, Pachyman — the Puerto Rican-born, Los Angeles-based musician Pachy Garcia — shares Another Place, a new album of possibility exploding dub, via ATO Records. Listen to and purchase Another Place here.

Concocted in Pachyman’s cozy basement studio 333 House in Los Angeles (as featured in his many viral TikToks), Another Place shares a deeply personal version of dub reggae. Informed by his childhood in Puerto Rico, his time playing shows at LA noise-pop mecca The Smell as drummer for Prettiest Eyes, and his current life in LA as a touring musician (he recently performed in Australia and Japan and opened for Darkside in the US) and avid cyclist.

While it’s indebted to the methods and techniques of dub legends like King Tubby and Scientist, the album revels in the explosive possibility of dub, incorporating techno (“Berlin” would not be out of place at Berghain), pastoral IDM in the vein of Boards Of Canada (“ADSH”), dread-inducing post-punk (the protest song “False Moves”), wah-wah guitar leads and cavernous percussive shuffles (“SJU”), and chillwave (“In Love“). There’s even the ESG-cribbing drone-funk lead single “Hard To Part,” an ode to his adopted home of Los Angeles that KCRW deemed “funky-spooky-cool” and put at #2 on their Top 30 chart).

“Calor Ahora,” which Pachyman describes as “the backbone of the record” and the moment when he “achieved a new sound that I had never encountered in my music before,” is a rippling, minimal dub that incorporates sparkling, alien synthesizers and a koan-like vocal. Watch the video for “Calor Ahora” — a goofy, direct-to-VHS-style send-up of LA noir mysteries — here.

Pachyman is preparing to take a new quartet lineup on the road for his upcoming Europe / UK tour dates and a recently announced North American co-headline tour with Stones Throw artist MNDSGN: Pachy on drums and vocals, Javier Perez on guitar, Jordan Brooks on bass, and Diego Gaeta on keys. See full dates below. Watch the Pachyman band in action in the “In Love” video.
