Today, Phantogram shared their latest single, ‘It Wasn’t Meant To Be’, which follows early album singles ‘Come Alive‘, ‘Happy Again‘, and ‘All A Mystery‘. The new songs weave together the band’s signature mix of hazy synths, hypnotic guitars, beat-crushing drum machines and mesmerising vocals. LISTEN HERE.
“‘It Wasn’t Meant To Be’ started as an idea mixing elements from Josh’s 4-track and a beat he made chopping up sounds from when we first started making music together,” note band members Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter. “A couple of years ago, we went up to rural Oregon to write and came up with the concept of relationships that bring you down, cause you pain, and draw out the worst in each other. However, despite all of that, there is still a deep attachment and devotion that keeps you together even though it’s killing you both.”
Phantogram will release their fifth album, Memory Of A Day on October 18 via Neon Gold Records. For the band’s Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, writing the new music was their most exciting experience creating together since their early days as a band – a rebirth for the lifelong friends, creating music freely during the recording process. “The new album feels like an awakening… We were able to go back to creating music and capturing magic like we did on the first album,” notes the band. “The sounds found throughout are also very colourful, which reflects our headspace while recording and is represented in the album artwork.” PRE-ORDER LP HERE.
The band is performing songs off of Memory Of A Day and other fan favourites on their current North America tour, both supporting Kings of Leon and a few headline dates. Fresh off of last night’s NYC show, their tour hits Washington, DC next and concludes in Boston, MA on October 7. See tour dates below and grab tickets here.
Memory Of A Day marks Phantogram’s fifth album, coming after their illustrious body of work that includes Eyelid Movies (2010), Voices (2014), Three (2016) and Ceremony (2020). The duo have collaborated with legends such as Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Billy Corgan, The Flaming Lips and Miley Cyrus, partnered with Big Boi of Outkast to form supergroup Big Grams, headlined sold out shows worldwide, become a festival staple and toured with artists including The xx, Muse, M83, alt-J, Arcade Fire, Queens of the Stone Age and more.
Lauded as an experimental and alternative band and one that’s never been married to a particular genre, Phantogram have continued to change the zeitgeist for almost a decade by consistently challenging it with their signature blend of hard-hitting beats, guitar driven dark psychedelia and electronic pop. Since the arrival of 2010’s Eyelid Movies, the duo has amassed over a billion streams, achieved one platinum-certified single, and two gold-certified singles.
